Estaréis de acuerdo conmigo en que la belleza que irradia un jardín vertical es algo que enmudece. Sobre todo si eres capaz de sentarte y mirarlo durante 10 minutos en silencio. Es como si te sumergieras en él. Al final no sabes como ese monumento verdoso llega a mantenerse vivito y coleando.
Para mí estas maravillosas creaciones son ofrendas a la naturaleza y además una especie de llamada para que volvamos por unos instantes a donde pertenecemos, a la madre tierra.
Por eso me fui el otro día a disfrutar una vez más del fantástico jardín vertical de Caixa Forum en el Paseo del Prado de Madrid, uno de los más fascinantes que he visto jamás.
Siempre me ha impresionado el que pese a lo agitado del trasiego urbano y los humos de los coches que pasan veloces a su lado, el muro vegetal de CaixaForum luce siempre espléndido. La primera obra en España del botánico francés Patrick Blanc es el mayor jardín vertical implantado sobre una fachada sin huecos en nuestro país. Ocupa 460 metros cuadrados de superficie vegetal (como una pista de tenis) y alberga 15.000 plantas de 250 especies que dibujan un gran tapiz.
Una curiosidad: el jardín sobrevive sin tierra, sólo necesita agua y nutrientes.
Tourists flood the area of Madrid's "Museum Mile" — a stretch of the huge, eight-lane Paseo del Prado thoroughfare that's home to Spain's most renowned art museums. It's smoggy and crowded with all the traffic.
At the CaixaForum, an arts foundation, people pause. It's what's on the outside of this museum, rather than what's inside, that's halted them: a giant vertical garden with more than 15,000 plants from 300 native species — begonias, yucca plants, ferns — coating an entire outer wall stretching the length of a city block.
The CaixaForum's vertical garden is quickly becoming a tourist attraction. Installed in 2008 and designed by the French botanist Patrick Blanc, it consists of a polyurethane sheet, plastic mesh and a non-biodegradable felt blanket coating the exterior wall of a former power plant adjacent to the museum. Irrigation hoses line the top. The felt layer acts as a sponge, absorbing water and allowing the plants to take root without soil.
Impresive, isn’t ?
Este jardín requiere prácticamente los mismos cuidados que cualquier otro. Únicamente necesita la luz solar y un sistema interno por goteo en el que, junto al agua, se le suministran a las plantas nutrientes. Hubo un susto al principio de su construcción. En junio de 2007, las 15.000 plantas de especies diferentes que lucían verdes desde el día de su inauguración aparecieron amarillentas un mes después de su inauguración y es que las obras de construcción del edificio Caixa Forum le estaba afectando.
Afortunadamente lo que apuntaba como una infancia difícil se ha convertido en una madurez lustrosa e, incluso, en un icono de la ciudad de Madrid.
It's both a work of art and something practical for the environment.
Walls like this one are part of Madrid's new strategy to fight climate change. The Spanish capital is one of the hottest, driest cities in Europe — on the front lines of this battle.
So the city has come up with a simple, low-tech solution: plants. Lots of them. Madrid aims to cover as much of its surface as possible with greenery — roof gardens, walls and empty lots.
You can see it changing — in summer, it's an incredible panel of colors. It helps to avoid noise, and it also helps to fight contamination because 460 [square] meters of plants give a considerable amount of oxygen to the air."
The vertical garden also insulates a south-facing wall from heat in summer and cold in winter. And it helps to lower Madrid's overall temperature, by boosting green space.
Pocos saben, o quizás no se acuerdan, que justo aquí hace poco más de 10 años se ubicaba una gasolinera y una subestación eléctrica que prendió en llamas en uno de los incendios más escandalosos que se recuerdan en el Paseo del Prado.
Posteriormente el terreno lo adquirió la Caixa para llevar a cabo su centro cultural en Madrid y, a la vez, este maravilloso jardín vertical. Lo que antaño fue un centro de contaminación es ahora un maravilloso mini pulmón de una de las principales arterias de la ciudad.
Pero lo más relevante es que se trata de un magnífico aislante térmico, permitiendo reducir el consumo de energía, y que contribuye a limpiar el aire madrileño, cada metro cuadrado genera el oxígeno consumido por una persona durante todo el año. Sesenta metros cuadrados pueden filtrar 400 toneladas de gases y atrapar 15 kilos de metales pesados y 30 kilos de polvo.
¿A qué ahora te gusta aún más?
Greenery also shades the pavement and releases water vapor into the air. Last summer, temperatures were measured at 7 degrees Fahrenheit lower in pilot neighborhoods, where the first of these gardens have been installed, than in neighborhoods with vacant lots, black roofs and no parks.
To water them, the city is re-paving plazas with porous material that captures rainwater. There are also tax breaks for companies that coat their roofs or facades with greenery.
This is all part of a larger environmental strategy that started with burying a major city highway in 2003 — routing it through an underground tunnel and then planting trees above. The area has since become one of the city's most popular parks.
The goal is to create a so-called "green envelope," protecting Madrid from the effects of climate change
