La fotografía de Colita es al flamenco como Penelope Cruz a Pedro Almodóvar: no se entienden el uno sin el otro. Y es que Isabel Steva Hernández (Barcelona, 1940) tenía apenas 22 años cuando, en el rodaje de la película 'Los tarantos', de Rovira Beleta, conoció a Carmen Amaya. Ese encuentro le marcó su vida profesional. «Jamás había visto ni sentido nada parecido en mi vida -escribió a propósito de ese momento-. Algo así como un deslumbramiento y una emoción hasta el llanto… "
Así empieza este fascinante recorrido fotográfico de la exposición que estos días podéis disfrutar en el Teatro Español de Madrid: el viaje que ella emprendió por el flamenco y que aún le lleva por territorios inexplorados.
A Isabel, en realidad, se le conoce como Colita, nombre artístico de una de las más relevantes fotógrafas españolas de los últimos años, especialmente de las décadas de los sesenta y setenta del siglo pasado. La Barcelona de esa época, su tierra natal, no puede entenderse sin su trabajo; la denominada 'Gauche Divine' -que englobaba a la intelectualidad de la Ciudad Condal de la época- quedó retratada por ella.
Colita's photography is linked to flamenco like Penelope Cruz to Pedro Almodóvar, they cannot be understood without each other. Isabel, in fact, is known as Colita, the artistic name of one of the most relevant Spanish photographers of recent years, especially in the sixties and seventies of the last century. The Barcelona of that time, her homeland, cannot be understood without her work; the so-called 'Gauche Divine' -which encompassed the intellectuality of Barcelona at the time- was portrayed by her.
Su encuentro con Carmen Amaya le llevó a adentrarse en el mundo del flamenco, y en su archivo se conservan más de 2.000 imágenes sobre este arte y sus artistas. La exposición 'Colita Flamenco: el viaje sin fin', que se puede ver desde hoy hasta el 24 de abril en la Sala Andrea d'Odorico del Teatro Español, reúne 70 de esas fotografías, que constituyen un testimonio único del flamenco en unos años de esplendor para este arte.
Ante el objetivo de Colita pasaron figuras indispensables del flamenco como Antonio Gades, Cristina Hoyos, La Chunga, Paco de Lucía -consiguió que el guitarrista posara sin camisa: «¡Era tan guapo!»-, Pepe Mairena, José Menese, Lola Flores, Juan Talega, La Piriñaca, Enrique Morente, Mayte Martín o Miguel Poveda.
An encounter with Carmen Amaya led her to get into the world of flamenco, and her archive holds more than 2,000 images of this art form and its artists. The exhibition 'Colita Flamenco: the endless journey', which can be seen from today until April 24 at the Andrea d'Odorico Hall of the Teatro Español, brings together 70 of these photographs, which constitute a unique testimony of flamenco in some years of splendor for this art.
Before Colita's lens went essential flamenco celebrities such as Antonio Gades, Cristina Hoyos, La Chunga, Paco de Lucía -he got the guitarist to pose shirtless: "He was so handsome!"-, Pepe Mairena, José Menese, Lola Flores, Juan Talega, La Piriñaca, Enrique Morente, Mayte Martín or Miguel Poveda.
Colita se adentró en el mundo del flamenco de la mano de sus artistas y de figuras como el pintor Paco Rebés o el poeta José Manuel Caballero Bonald -de él eran los textos de su primer libro sobre este arte, 'Luces y sombras del flamenco', editado en 1973 y reeditado y ampliado en 2007-.
Recorrió los poblados gitanos barceloneses de Somorrostro (donde nació Carmen Amaya) y Montjuic. Su pasión por el flamenco se puede ver en otros dos libros: 'Carmen Amaya 1963. Taranta. Agosto. Luto. Ausencia', con textos de Ana Maria Moix y fotografías adicionales de Julio Urbina (1999); y 'Sinmisterios del flamenco', con textos de Manuel Lorente Rivas, y donde además de sus fotografías hay instantáneas de Carlos Arbelos y Steve Kahn.
Colita entered the world of flamenco by the hand of flamenco artists and figures such as the painter Paco Rebés or the poet José Manuel Caballero Bonald -he wrote the texts of his first book on this art, 'Luces y sombras del flamenco', published in 1973 and reedited and expanded in 2007-.
She visited the gypsy villages of Somorrostro (where Carmen Amaya was born) and Montjuic in Barcelona. Her passion for flamenco can be seen in two other books: 'Carmen Amaya 1963. Taranta. August. Mourning. Ausencia', with texts by Ana Maria Moix and additional photographs by Julio Urbina (1999); and 'Sinmisterios del flamenco', with texts by Manuel Lorente Rivas, and where in addition to his photographs there are snapshots by Carlos Arbelos and Steve Kahn.
La exposición, presentada en la Alhambra granadina a principios de 2017, ha sido comisariada por Francesc Polop, que confesó en la presentación que las fotos le siguen impresionando. «Está hecha a mi medida, como un traje sastre recién cortado; tiene el tamaño justo y la distribución perfecta», ha asegurado Colita y que nosotros corroboramos al 100%.

The exhibition, exhibited at the Alhambra in Granada in early 2017, was curated by Francesc Polop, who confessed at the presentation that the photos continue to impress him. "It is tailor-made for me, like a freshly cut tailor suit; it has the right size and the perfect distribution," Colita has assured and that we corroborate 100%.
