Hasta nuestras antípodas os llevo para que veáis la última creación de una de las artistas más vanguardistas e influyentes del arte moderno actual ( a mi, la verdad, me encanta) Os hablo de Katharina Grosse y de su “misteriosa” obra titulada “El caballo cabalgó un par de metros más y después se paró” que acaba de inaugurar en el Centro de Arte Carriageworks en Sidney, Australia.
Hablamos de 8.000 m2 de tela, drapeados, anudados y dispuestos por todo el amplio y diáfano espacio expositivo de Carriageworks. Un lienzo de dimensiones épicas, casi interminable que, posteriormente, Grosse intervino sirviéndose de una pistola de pintura. La artista pintó varias capas en las superficies y pliegues de la monumental tela creando un submundo bello y tóxico a la vez. La sensación como espectador es de estar en otro mundo, en un ambiente sublime y onírico, pero también abrumador y ciertamente grandilocuente.
Artist Katharina Grosse has given the interiors of Sydney’s Carriageworks gallery a kaleidoscopic paint job for her new site-specific installation.
The artwork – titled The Horse Trotted Another Couple of Metres, Then It Stopped – plays with the industrial volumes of the heritage-listed arts centre. Berlin-based Grosse has hung 8,250 sq m of knotted and draped fabrics from the trusses and walls of the colossal building, which is part of the Victorian-era Eveleigh Rail Complex Yards and was once a train carriage workshop.
The artist has transformed the drapes – and in turn, the gallery’s interiors – by applying layers of contrasting colours with a spray gun. It continues her interest in manipulating architecture, such as a derelict aquatics centre in New York’s Queens and the white confines of the South London gallery during Frieze. She is fascinated by the thought of folding space and interested in taking this vast surface and shrinking it by folding or, actually, hiding the entirety of what’s there.
Esta nueva hazaña artística de gran impacto destaca además por exaltar y encumbrar la arquitectura del edificio que la acoge: Carriageworks. Fue sede desde 1890 hasta 1988 de los Eveleigh Rail Yards, los talleres ferroviarios que albergaban dentro de ellos la historia de la principal red ferroviaria de Australia y los miles de habitantes de Sydney que trabajaron allí durante la bulliciosa época industrial del siglo XIX. El edificio, ahora patrimonio de la ciudad, fue comprado en 2002 por Ministerio de Artes de NSW, momento en el que dieron comienzo al proyecto de Carriageworks, un centro artístico donde se pueden explorar, desarrollar, encargar y presentar trabajos creativos, y que fue oficialmente inaugurado en el año 2007.
And what of the artwork’s title? For her It doesn’t mean anything, but it conveys an atmosphere, She says that in the moment we stop our ritualised, rhythmic movements, it opens up your vision to something you hadn’t seen before. I am agree.
The Horse Trotted Another Couple of Metres, Then It Stopped is the third annual Schwartz Carriageworks international commission. It forms part of the Sydney Festival 2018, and opens on 6 January, running until 8 April 2018.
