Marlon Brandon enfundado una camiseta agujereada de una marca de cigarrillos, vigilando al resto con mirada seria. Son imágenes que formaron parte de la noche madrileña de finales de los setenta y primeros ochenta y no porque los protagonistas se pasearan juntos por los garitos de la capital, sino porque hubo un local que reunió una impresionante colección de retratos pop de todos esos y de alguno más, gracias al talento de Costus.
Los retratos descritos y otros once más decoraban un bar-restaurante que acababa de abrir en aquella época y que hoy cualquier madrileño conoce: La Vía Láctea. En 1979 el local de la calle Velarde, en el corazón de Malasaña, quería llevar a su interior a las estrellas del momento como parte de la decoración y para ello, su responsable tiró de una pareja de jóvenes prometedora, Costus (apodo de Enrique Naya y Juan Carrero) con un estilo llamativo y una gran inventiva.
El resto es historia. El bar cerró y todas sus obras de arte quedaron sepultadas y casi abandonadas...hasta ahora.

They are images that were part of the Madrid nightlife of the late seventies and early eighties and not because the protagonists strolled together through the bars of the capital, but because there was a place that brought together an impressive collection of pop portraits of all these and some more, thanks to the talent of Costus.
These portraits and eleven others decorated a bar-restaurant that had just opened at that time and today every Madrilenian knows: La Vía Láctea (The Milky Way). In 1979, the bar on Velarde Street, in the heart of Malasaña, wanted to bring the stars of the moment into its interior as part of the decoration and to do so, its manager called upon a promising young couple, Costus (nickname of Enrique Naya and Juan Carrero) with a striking style and great inventiveness.
The rest is history. The bar closed and all its works of art were buried and almost abandoned...until now.
Y digo hasta ahora porque todas las piezas han sido restauradas por la iniciativa privada de un coleccionista para su vuelta al público, muy dañadas después del lustro que soportaron los rigores de la noche en forma de humo del tabaco, ataques de copas y la efusividad de la fauna nocturna.
El resultado es un conjunto impactante, con tono enérgico y alegre, que transporta a otra época muy distinta, en la que unas obras de tanta calidad podían cubrir algo tan prosaico como las paredes de un bar. Estas obras han vuelto a ver la luz y se han reunido de nuevo, esta vez, en la Serrería Belga, con motivo de la exposición Costus: La Vía Láctea, organizada por el Ayuntamiento de Madrid. Parecen recién sacadas del estudio.
Until now, because all the pieces have been restored by a private initiative of a collector in order to give them back to the public, very damaged after five years of suffering nighttime smoke, drinking parties and the effusiveness of the nighttime crowd.
The result is a striking collection, with an energetic and cheerful tone, which transports us to a very different era, when works of such quality could cover something as prosaic as the walls of a bar. The works have seen the light again and have been brought together again, this time at the Serrería Belga, on the occasion of the exhibition Costus: La Vía Láctea, organized by the Madrid City Council. They look as if they had just been taken out of the studio.
La muestra es una oportunidad estupenda para disfrutar con la obra de Costus en Madrid, donde no abunda (su serie más conocida, El Valle de los Caídos, se encuentra en Cádiz). Para paliarlo, el Ayuntamiento de Madrid acaba de adquirir el cuadro Caños de Meca, a través del Museo de Arte Contemporáneo municipal y que, aprovechando la muestra, se exhibe en una pequeña sala anexa, donde también se repasan las diferentes épocas del dúo.
No os la perdais. Merece la pene verla con calma.
The exhibition is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy Costus' work in Madrid, a city where it is not very abundant (his best-known series, El Valle de los Caídos, is in Cadiz). In order to make up for all that, the Madrid City Council has just acquired the painting Caños de Meca, through the municipal Museum of Contemporary Art, which, taking advantage of the show, is exhibited in a small adjoining room, where the different periods of the duo are also reviewed.
Do not miss it. It is worth visiting calmly.
