Quién le iba a decir al diseñador y artista Agustín Martíenez Gil que unas postales de vírgenes que encontró por casualidad a precio de saldo en una tienda de Torremolinos hace años le iban a servir como base de su exposición en Madrid.
Y es que "Vírgenes y Santas" (que así se llama la muestra) es un homenaje a sus raíces "a esas estampas religiosas que tenía mi abuela y mi madre guardadas en los cajones y que forman parte de mi niñez". Las que podemos ver en la exposición están "revestidas" en forma de collage e incluso una lleva un manto de Louis Vuitton.
Toda la exposición se puede ver a lo largo y ancho del restaurante Mamaquilla (José Abascal 61, Madrid) y es sólo una pequeña muestra de su recorrido como artista a lo largo de los años. Impresionan sus jardines (laberínticos y perfectos) sus abstractos (tan geométricos y minimalistas) y el color..."algo que, según el artista, te puede cambiar tu percepción de las cosas".
Si ya como interiorista y decorador era uno de los imprescindibles en nuestro país, ahora Agustín Martínez Gil (o elRubio su nombre artístico con el que firma su obra) da un giro de 180% en su carrera y lo apuesta todo por la pintura, "por el auténtico yo y porque en la vida hay que tomar decisiones arriesgadas para no perderse nada de lo que te ella te ofrece".
Who would have thought to the designer and artist Agustin Martinez Gil that some postcards of Madonnas that he found by chance at a bargain price in a store in Torremolinos, Spain, years ago would be used as the core of his exhibition in Madrid.
The fact is that "Virgins and Saints" ( the exhibition is called that way) is a tribute to his roots "to those religious cards that my grandmother and my mother kept in their drawers and that are part of my childhood". The ones we can see in the exhibition are " dressed" as a collage and one of them even wears a Louis Vuitton cloak.
The entire exhibition can be seen throughout Mamaquilla restaurant (José Abascal 61, Madrid) and is just a small sample of his journey as an artist over the years. Very impressive are the gardens (labyrinthine and perfect), the abstracts (so geometric and minimalist) and the color... "something that, according to the artist, can change your perception of things".
If as an interior designer and decorator he was already one of the essential artists in Spain, now Agustín Gil (or elRubio as he is well known in art world) makes a 180% turn in his career and bets everything on painting, " on the real me and because in life you have to take risky decisions in order not to miss anything that life has to offer you".
Las "Vírgenes y Santas" de Agustín Martínez Gil forman parte de sus colecciones de collage, algo que el artista le interesa explorar porque "dan lugar a una imagen más potente que la original". Es el caso de las expuestas en la muestra; son las clásicas estampitas religiosas de toda la vida "pero con un punto más divertido y simpatico". El artista asegura haberles dado un aire más contemporáneo a estas imágenes tan clásicas y "siempre desde el más profundo de los respetos darles otra lectura más artística, sin ofender a nadie".
El resultado no podía ser más espectacular; unas vírgenes y santas alegres, con un toque irónico y mucho humor que han causado furor entre los compradores que, en el primer día de exposición, se han vendido absolutamente todas.
Agustín Gil's " Vírgenes y Santas" are part of his collage collections, something that the artist wants to explore because " they result in a more powerful image than the original one". This is the case of the ones exhibited in the show; they are the classic religious holy cards of a lifetime "but with a more amusing and sympathetic point". The artist claims to have given a more contemporary air to such classic images and "always with the deepest respect in order to give them a more artistic reading, without offending anyone".
The result could not be more spectacular; some cheerful virgins and saints, with an ironic touch and a lot of humor that have caused a sensation among the buyers who, during the first day of the exhibition, have sold absolutely everything.
La serie de "Jardines" muestra muy bien el carácter de Agustín Martínez Gil como artista. "Representan el laberinto, el tener que tomar decisiones en la vida. De ir a la izquierda o la derecha sin saber lo que te vas a encontrar. Ese, para mí, es el concepto del laberinto y lo que intento reflejar en mi serie de jardines". Casi todos los que pinta Martínez Gil están inspirados en los de Sabatini de Madrid donde pasea con su perro todos los días. Son jardines arquitectónicos, que hablan muy bien de quién es y de su criterio estético: simplificar al máximo las imágenes y darles un contenido muy volumétrico.
Son jardines misteriosos, muy estructurados que nos invitan a meternos dentro y perdernos en sus laberintos.
The " Jardines" series illustrates Agustín Martínez Gil's character as an artist very well. "They represent the labyrinth, about having to make decisions in life. Whether to go left or right without knowing what you are going to find. That, for me, is the concept of the labyrinth and what I try to reflect in my series of gardens." Nearly all the gardens Agustín Martínez Gil paints are inspired by the Sabatini gardens in Madrid where he walks with his dog every day. They are architectural gardens, which speak very well of who he is and about his aesthetic criteria: simplifying the images as much as possible and giving them a very volumetric content.
The gardens are mysterious, very structured, and they invite us to get inside and get lost in the maze of their labyrinths.
Como veis el color y el volumen son los rasgos que marcan su obra figurativa. Destacan también sus trabajos abstractos basados en la línea recta y los espacios, campos, planos y volúmenes que esta va creando. Son arquitecturas imposibles, composiciones donde el equilibrio de las formas, los espacios y los vacíos tratan de llegar a un equilibrio estético.
La exposición estará abierta al público hasta el próximo 5 de julio.

As you can see, color and volume are the traits of Agustín Gil's figurative work. Also noteworthy are his abstract works based on the straight line and the spaces, fields, planes and volumes that it creates. They are impossible architectures, compositions where the balance of shapes, spaces and voids try to reach an aesthetic balance.
The exhibition will be open to the public until July 5.
