De todos los murales que se pueden admirar en el East Side Gallery del antiguo Muro de Berlín quizás este sea el más famoso. Es el beso de tornillo entre dos hombres, el que se dieron en 1979 el líder de la extinta Unión Soviética, Leonid Brezhnev, y el presidente de la antigua República Democrática de Alemania, Erich Honecker durante la conmemoración del 30 aniversario de la RDA. Con este efusivo beso ambos dictadores sellaban su alianza sin saber que 10 años más tarde todo se desplomaría de la noche a la mañana.
Eso es que yo pensaba mientras miraba el mural y esperaba pacientemente a que un grupo de turistas terminara de hacerse el tan deseado selfie ante este icono de lo que queda de Muro de Berlín; como el mundo que actualmente conocemos puede cambiar en un abrir y cerrar de ojos. Eso es lo que está pasando y a lo que nos tenemos que acostumbrar queramos o no.
Y como los cambios son oportunidades para todos, porqué no aprovercharlos para quitarnos todo lo que no nos gustaba pero no teníamos más remedio que hacerlo y, por fin, quedarnos con lo bueno, aquello que tu corazón te dice que merece la pena conservar.
Quizás el muro que haya que derribar ahora no sea tan ideológico como el de Berlín sino el de nuestros propios miedos y fobias.
Among all the paintings that can be admired here in the East Side Gallery of the former Berlin Wall, this is perhaps the most famous. In 1979, the leader of the former Soviet Union, Leonid Brezhnev, and the President of the former German Democratic Republic, Erich Honecker, kissed each other on the spot during the 30th anniversary celebrations of the GDR. With this effusive kiss both dictators sealed their alliance without knowing that 10 years later everything would collapse overnight.
I thought of this as I looked at the mural and waited patiently for a group of tourists to finish their selfie in front of this icon of what is left of the Berlin Wall; how the world we know today can easily change in a blink of an eye. That is what is happening and what we have to get used to whether we want to or not.
And since changes are opportunities for everyone, why not take advantage of them to take away everything that we didn't like but had no other choice than do it and, finally, keep what is good, what your heart tells you is worth keeping.
Perhaps the wall that needs to be torn down now is not as ideological as the Berlin wall, but the wall of our own fears and phobias.
Este es el mayor tramo que se conserva de los restos del Muro de Berlín, mide 1,3 kilómetros y es conocido como la East Side Gallery, la mayor galería de arte al aire libre del mundo.
A lo largo del muro, se pueden ver cientos de graffitis de artistas procedentes de todo el mundo, que trataron de documentar mediante sus obras el cambio producido tras la caída del Muro de Berlín. Mediante sus obras expresan una gran sensación de euforia y esperanza por un futuro libre y mejor.
A través de las pinturas, los artistas trataron de expresar sus protestas y mensajes como memoria de un momento histórico tan importante.
Al ser una galería al aire libre durante sus casi 30 años de existencia el tiempo y los ataques vandálicos la han deteriorado por lo que en 1996, Kani Alavi fundó la Asociación East Side Gallery, una iniciativa para preservar y restaurar los trabajos. El el año 2000, un tramo de 300 metros ya había sido restaurado, y en el 2009 toda la East Side Gallery.
The East Side Gallery was opened on 28 September 1990. The artists created murals with individual messages and statements, demonstrating that in the end, the desire for freedom and creativity is stronger than sanctions and force. The more than 100 paintings are an expression of the happiness felt over the fall of the Wall and the end of division.
The East Side Gallery artists were able to prevent their works from demolition, further decay and destruction. The city of Berlin added the East Side Gallery to its monument register in November 1991. It was the most visible outcome of the opening of the Wall, but now, with almost the entire Berlin Wall gone, it is one of the few remaining relics of the border fortifications at its original location, serving as a reminder that the city was divided for 28 years. In 1996 several of the artists became involved in the East Side Gallery Artist Initiative, an association that supports conservation of the artwork and was initiated by Kani Alavi.
De los 155 kilometros que medía el antiguo Muro que dividía Berlín Este del Oeste sólo queda en pie este kilometro y medio como parte de la historia reciente de la ciudad.
Y es que, quizás, Berlín no destaque por su belleza, pero su historia reciente es apasionante y los alemanes no han tratado de ocultarla. Al contrario; siguiendo la máxima de «quien olvida su historia está condenado a repetirla», han levantado numerosos memoriales, monumentos y museos que nos recuerdan los capítulos más oscuros de su pasado.
Por eso cuendo vayais a Berlín no dejeis de ver este «Muro de la vergüenza», una de esas manchas negras en la historia de la ciudad para que nada como esto se vuelva a repetir.

As you can see Berlin is a city that never forgets its recent past. The remaining stretches of wall are now a lasting part of Berlin and the East Side Gallery is one of the most memorable landmarks in Berlin.A definite must-see.
