La primera impresión que tuve de Valparaiso fue “ Ay Dios mío, dónde me he metido” pero me duró tan sólo unos minutos. Cuando empecé a recorrer sus empinadas calles me di cuenta que estaba en una ciudad única y maravillosa, llena de color y de algo que a mí siempre me ha fascinado: graffitis y arte callejero por donde quiera que mires.
Todos nos habían dicho que tuviésemos cuidado, que estábamos en una de las ciudades más peligrosas de Chile pero lo que yo vi fue una ciudad abierta, bohemia, fresca, artística y emergente de sus cenizas. Es cierto que su urbanización es endiablada pero su arquitectura es hermosa.
Me dio la impresión de que Valparaiso mira al Pacífico como Lisboa mira al Atlántico, añorando tiempos de gloria. Es por eso su estilo decadente y algo “grunch”; pero creo que es precisamente eso lo que le está haciendo resurgir de sus cenizas. Como Valparaiso no hay dos.
When I told local Chileans of our plan to visit Valparaiso along our journey through their country, we received our fair share of warnings to be cautious. Yet after our visit, we proclaimed the city to be among our favorites in all of South America.
Why? Like many port towns the world over, Valparaiso, Chile features a sort of dodgy-meets-edgy vibe. Yeah, at first impression it feels a little scruffy, down-at-the-heels, almost seedy. But its lingering aura says it's more bohemian, artistic, fresh and emergent. And like any good city finding its way through urban revival, the two forces at work, while opposing, need each other to bring the city to the next stage of its life.
In the last decade or so, Valparaiso (affectionately known as “Valpo”) has undergone a sort of urban and artistic revival. Through it all, the city has managed to balance its grungy, port city roots with its turn-of-the-century elegance and architecture stock.
Si algo recalco de Valparaiso es la simpatia de la gente. La verdad es que siempre te ayudan a buscar el sitio más interesante, el mejor restaurante y así todo se hace más amable y amigable ( al menos para mí).
La ciudad es Patrimonio de la Humanidad y ese título lo defienden a capa y espada. No en vano la calidad y el diseño de los artistas grafiteros se aprecia en cada rincón de Valparaiso.
A la ciudad se la puede conocer sin ir a ningún museo o sin tomar ningún medio de transporte. Se la puede conocer solo caminando. Y qué mejor que andar para descubrir un lugar y sus detalles.
Most importantly during my visit to Valparaiso I found exceptionally friendly people. They helped turn on to bits of a flourishing street art scene, pointing here and there, drawing us more deeply onto the city’s streets and into its hills. At each turn, like a scavenger hunt, I’d pursue our curiosity and discover something more, unearthing the essence and the heart of this city.
Street art in Valparaiso is taken seriously and is supported by both local businesses and local government. Perhaps this is why the quality and quantity of urban murals and quality artistry across Valparaiso is so high. Clearly, I wasn't the only one impacted by what I’d seen. It is common to see pedestrians stopped in their tracks to admire a work of street art.
Fue un acierto reservar habitación en el Gran Hotel Gervasoni, una imponente casa de 1870 con sabor e historia por cualquiera de sus rincones. Se encuentra ubicado en el cerro más bonito de Valparaiso, con vistas espectaculares a la ciudad y al Pacífico. Qué rico el cóctel de bienvenida y qué bien nos recibió Tomás. Cuando vuelva a Valparaiso, que volveré sin duda, allí estaré de nuevo.
It was a wise choice to book a room at the Gran Hotel Gervasoni, an imposing house from 1870 with flavor and history in all its parts. It is located in the most beautiful hill of Valparaiso, with spectacular views to the city and the Pacific Ocean. How tasty the welcome cocktail was and how well Tomás received us. When I return to Valparaiso, I definitely will, I'll be there again.
¿A qué tiene un punto hipnótico esta ciudad? Cada esquina es una obra de arte que te deja boquiabierto. Algunos la conocen como “la pequeña San Francisco” pero creo que lo único que tienen en común las dos ciudades es que miran al Pacífico y algunas casas de madera de estilo europeo del XIX; nada mas. Y es que, como os dije al principio, Valparaiso es única.
And as anywhere in the world, Valparariso’s graffiti – across city walls and on the sides of buildings – comes bearing political, environmental, and societal messages. And although I couldn’t comprehend the full story of each work I’d seen, I could still appreciate the creativity and skill, the emotion and energy it took to create and share.
