Cómo he disfrutado la exposición de posters sobre la figura de Nelson Mandela que hasta enero la podréis ver en El Matadero de Madrid. Son los 95 posters de diferentes artistas internacionales que han recorrido el mundo y que representan los 95 años que vivió el líder sudafricano y Premio Nobel de la Paz.
En todos los carteles predominan las palabras libertad, paz, justicia, humanidad y así hasta un sinfín de calificativos que me hacen reflexionar en lo mucho que luchó Mandela por la igualdad de los seres humanos y en lo que le debemos a figuras como él.
Este proyecto surgió en 2013, cuando un grupo de diseñadores sudafricanos propusieron homenajear la figura de Nelson Mandela reuniendo 95 excepcionales posters de todo el mundo, honrando así la contribución que realizó Madiba durante toda su vida a la humanidad. Mediante una convocatoria abierta de 60 días, más de 700 posters fueron enviados por diseñadores de más de 70 países.
Se eligiera estos 95 que podéis ver en la muestra.
How I enjoyed the exhibition of posters on the figure of Nelson Mandela that it can be seen at Matadero in Madrid until next January. The exhibition is made by 95 posters of different international artists and represent the 95 years who lived the South African leader and Nobel Peace Prize.
Words as freedom, peace, justice, humanity, and so on are in all posters and make me think on how much Mandela fought for equals human rights and what we owe to figures like him.
This project came in 2013, when a group of South African designers proposed to honor the figure of Nelson Mandela by gathering 95 exceptional posters from all over the world, honoring Madiba's contribution throughout his life to humanity. Through an open call for 60 days, more than 700 posters were sent by designers from more than 70 countries. 95 were chosen to be in the exhibition that has traveled all over the world.
A Nelson Mandela se le conoce también como Madiba o como Tata Mandela y es, después de la Coca-Cola, la marca más conocida en todo el mundo. Esto significa que el expresidente sudafricano es un auténtico icono internacional con multitud de símbolos y mucho poder de convocatoria. Esto es precisamente lo que podemos ver a través de estos 95 posters.
A diferencia de otro icono como el Ché Guevara con solo un par de fotos que le identifican, a Mandela lo podemos ver con el puño levantado, con guantes de boxeo, de perfil, con la imagen de Africa etc pero sobre todo con una cara amplia y una generosa sonrisa. Y yo creo que ese es el mensaje subliminal del propio Mandela y del de su icono: el poder de una sonrisa para afrontar cualquier tipo de situaciones.
There are many terms used to describe Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela. In the same breath it must also be acknowledged that after Coca-Cola, Mandela has become the best known brand internationally. It means that Mandela/Madiba/Tata Mandela, or however South Africans prefer to refer to the great man, one cannot simply talk about the man without also implying the global icon that he has become.
In the 95 poster icons selected here the icon “at work” can be seen. In those posters iconizing Mandela’s face, the features are reduced and simplified to bare essentials. In contrast to the Korda photograph of Che Guevara, there is not one image that dominates the field of representation, but rather a few images that keep cropping up e.g. Mandela with raised fist as he leaves prison, young Mandela with box gloves, profile images but mostly a broad generous face smiling.
A sus 95 años, Mandela estaba ya muy cansado. Minutos después de conocer su muerte, la Fundación Nelson Mandela publicó en Twitter una de sus últimas frases que se hizo viral en tan sólo unos segundos: "La muerte es inevitable. Cuando un hombre ha hecho todo lo que creía que debía hacer por su pueblo y su país, puede morir tranquilo”.
Un hombre solo no puede cambiar la historia. Pero la historia de un hombre puede ser decisiva para inspirar cambios. Sin duda, el mundo no sería el mismo sin Nelson Mandela. Gracias Madiba por haber existido.
At 95, Mandela was already very tired. Minutes after his death, the Nelson Mandela Foundation published on Twitter one of his last words that became viral in just a few seconds: "Death is inevitable. When a man has done everything he thought he should do for his people and his country, can die calm. "
A man alone can not change history. But a man's story can be decisive in inspiring change. Without a doubt, the world would not be the same without Nelson Mandela. Thank you Madiba for having existed.
