Bienvenidos al barrio más pintoresco de Bruselas, el de Matongué; un trocito de África en el corazón de la capital belga que os encantará por su variedad cultural y colorido. Su ubicación en la ciudad no deja de ser curiosa; está justo en medio de los acristalados y modernísimos edificios de la Unión Europea y de la lujosísima Avenue Louise donde encontraréis las tiendas más caras de la ciudad.
Así que entre coches y ropa de lujo y funcionaros europeos se encuentra este colorido y étnico barrio; un lugar estupendo de muchísimo ambiente, locales de moda y restaurantes estupendos. Cuando vayáis a Bruselas no dudéis en visitarlo.
Brussels has a strong claim to the title of the cosmopolitan Capital of Europe, not just due to its position as home to the major seats of government for the European Union, but also because it is one of the world’s most genuinely multicultural cities.
The place to kick off exploring exotic Brussels is unquestionably the African neighbourhood of Matongé, just a few minutes walk from the designer boutiques that line Avenue Louise, but a million miles away in terms of culture. Guide books rarely devote more than a few lines to Matongé, named after a lively part of the Congolese capital, Kinshasa, but its restaurants offer a panoply of African cuisine - from the Congo, Rwanda, Burundi, Cameroon, Ivory Coast. Pretty much all the Matongé restaurants double as bars and dance venues, opening their doors at midday and not closing till sunrise.
El barrio toma su nombre de un barrio de Kinshasa, la capital de la República Democrática del Congo, antigua colonia belga. Matongé ha dejado atrás los conflictos de hace algunos años y se ha transformado, poco a poco, en uno de los focos culturales y de ocio de Bruselas. Muchos jóvenes de la ciudad se dirigen a sus calles, convertidas en punto de encuentro de moda, para disfrutar de la creatividad y del buen ambiente que se respira en el barrio.
Y es que las calles están repletas de tiendas originales, hostales baratos donde alojarte durante tu visita a Bruselas y animados clubes donde pasar la noche. Completan la imagen peluquerías, exóticas tiendas de alimentación y restaurantes donde podrás probar la cocina africana más auténtica sin salir de la capital europea.
Despite the cold and grey that define the city, the streets of Matongé are always full of life. African culture is lived out here: street markets, call centres, people meeting in hairdressers, having tea and spending the whole afternoon there. Daily life is shared, and not lived only by individuals. Outside Matongé, the street markets become large malls, call centres have long disappeared, and if you want to go to the hairdresser, it is usual to request an appointment in order not to have to wait.
The name Matongé reveals the historical background of the neighbourhood. It is named after the commercial district and marketplace in Kinshasa, the capital of Congo, the old belgian colony.
La música africana está por todas partes, siempre hay buen ambiente. Una cosa muy curiosa de estas galerías es la cantidad de peluquerías que hay. En ellas verás cómo las peluqueras hacen a toda velocidad peinados de trenzas imposibles y cosen extensiones. A mí me resultó muy curioso, y para quien se anime, estas peluquerías no son nada caras. Se dice que conviven en el barrio más de 45 nacionalidades africanas además de alguna otra invitada. A muchas de ellas se las puede ver en perfecta armonía en una calle tan seductora como la rue Longue Vie, olvidándose de las rencillas y rencores que los enfrentan en sus respectivos países y territorios.
In the south of Matonge, rue St Boniface is another kind of meeting place, crammed with restaurants and bars, from Japanese ramen to Belgian mussels and all points between. It's a magnet for young Belgians and expats, and responsible for coaxing a younger, richer public into the area."Mixed" is a word you hear a lot from the residents of Matonge: that's a huge part of its appeal. From 78-year-old Bartholomé and his parrot Chirac, still mending shoes on rue de l'Athénée, to the kids checking each other out in the fried chicken shops, all human life is there.
Y también quiero que conozcais unos de los mayores y mejores secretos de este barrio: AQUÍ NACIÓ LA GRAN AUDREY HEPBURN. Para mí esta casa en pleno Matongué es un casi un lugar de peregrinación porque Audrey era más que una actriz, fue un icono de esa época dorada que ya nunca volverá. Muchos creen que era americana o francesa; pues era belga y de Matongué, algo así como ser castiza, madrileña y de Lavapies. La casa está justo saliendo del barrio en dirección a la Avenue Louise.
And I want you to know one of the biggest and best secrets of this neighborhood: HERE WAS BORN THE GREAT AUDREY HEPBURN . For me this house is almost a place of pilgrimage because Audrey was more than an actress , she was an icon of that golden age that will never return .
Many believe she was American or French ; no way She was Belgian and from Matongué , something very ethic as you have seen here . The house is just off the neighborhood in the direction of the Avenue Louise
Como veis, Matongué no es un gueto ni pretende serlo. Es cierto que aquí en otra época hubo conflictos raciales e incluso problemas de delincuencia pero ahora compite como foco de atracción cultural de la ciudad. Los cines Vandome ( un templo del cine independiente) está en el barrio y su festival de música ( que es a finales de junio) está catalogado como atracción turística de la ciudad.
En definitiva, este barrio merece la pena.
As you can see , Matongué is not a ghetto nor intended to be . It is true that here at one time there were racial conflicts and even crime problems but now it competes as a center of cultural attraction of the city . The Vandome Theater ( a temple for independent films ) is in the neighborhood and its music festival is in all tourist guide (which is at the end of June by the way) as one of the mayor city tourist attraction .
In short , this neighborhood worth it .
