Para todos los amantes de la película de Julia Roberts y Huge Grant va dirigido este post. Y es que Notting Hill tiene un halo romántico que lo notarás nada más pisar el barrio. No sé, será por sus señoriales casas, sus hermosos jardines, sus mansiones coloridas o por su magnífico mercado de Portobello. Todas esas señales te indican que estas en un barrio diferente de Londres, aquí ( sencillamente) todo es más bonito, más sencillo, más...romántico. Ahora entiendo porqué Anna Scott entró en la librería de Willian Thacker y se enamoró perdidamente de él. Por supuesto tenía que ser en Notting Hill.

Despite a sordid history, Notting Hill has transformed into one of the fancier, more desired districts of London with an influx of some of the city’s rich and famous.
Hace 50 años, Notting Hill estaba considerado un barrio poco recomendable. A pesar de que había nacido con aspiraciones señoriales a mediados del siglo XIX, con grandes mansiones y posteriormente bloques de apartamentos con clase, se convirtió en una zona degradada después de la II Guerra Mundial. En los años cincuenta se instalaron allí muchos inmigrantes afrocaribeños y a finales de la década estallaron una serie de conflictos raciales que cimentaron la fama peligrosa del barrio. A alguien, sin embargo, se le ocurrió celebrar un carnaval como alternativa pacífica a los disturbios. Y funcionó. Desde entonces, a partir de 1964, el último fin de semana de agosto, una multitud festiva ocupa las calles del barrio para celebrar el famoso carnaval.
Paralelamente, Notting Hill sigue teniendo en el mercado de antigüedades de los sábados su multitudinaria fiesta semanal, mientras sus casas y apartamentos se cotizan cada vez más al alza por parte de jóvenes que se muestran encantados de poder vivir en una céntrica zona de Londres que ha logrado aunar lo imposible: el ambiente selecto y fashioncon el sabor a barrio y la cultura alternativa.
Notting Hill hasn’t always been a hangout for celebrities and politicians – less than 50 years ago it was one of the most run down areas of London. During the nineteenth century, Notting Hill was a rural and industrial area known for its clay and pig farms, earning it the nickname “The Piggeries and Potteries”.
A decline in industry during the twentieth century saw most of the houses in the area transformed into multiple occupancy dwellings and after the Second World War the standards of living were so low that Notting Hill became a slum.
Notting Hill was populated by many immigrants from the West Indies plus artists and creative types also began to move in, making it one of the most diverse areas of London.
Since the 1980s, the area has become incredibly gentrified and is now considered to be one of the most exclusive areas of the capital. Gentrification has unfortunately forced out many of the former residents and creative types, pricing them out of the area and thus losing some of its former diversity and “credibility”.
The area is still known for its colourful houses and famous Notting Hill Carnival (now a gathering of all Londoners, generally peacefully, from every class, race and creed) which is a staple in the diary of most Londoners!
El mercado de Portobello, en pleno corazón de Notting Hill, os sonará aunque nunca hayas estado allí. Son esos sitios como Nueva York o la colina de Hollywood que os resultará familiar nada más pisarlo de tantas veces que lo habéis visto en las películas.
Se caracteriza, sobre todo, por los pintorescos puestos de antigüedades y ropa de segunda mano, convirtiéndolo en uno de los mercados callejeros más famosos y con más solera de la capital de Inglaterra. También se pueden encontrar otros productos como especias, utensilios de cocina y deliciosas frutas y verduras frescas, por nombrar algunos. Recorrer Portobello un sábado cualquiera es impregnarse del ambiente más londinense y sumergirse por un momento en la larga historia de esta bonita calle.
Dating back to the 1800s, the Portobello Road Market has evolved and changed throughout the years and is now one of London’s hippest markets. You will find a little bit of everything here – antiques, posters, vintage clothes and food – with over 1000 dealers there is a great assortment of shops and stalls. The main market days are Friday and Saturday but there is a smaller market open throughout the week.
Every year since 1965 over the August bank holiday weekend, Notting Hill comes alive with Caribbean colours, music, dancing, food and vibes. The Notting Hill Carnival is one of London’s most popular annual events, celebrating Afro-Caribbean culture in the city. Get out your feathers and glitter – this street party is not to be missed and it is guaranteed to get your hips swinging.
A pesar del ambiente de mercadillo que os pueda dar Portobello Road no os engañeis, Notting Hill es la cuna del “Boho-chic”, es decir lo bohemio-chic. Es por eso que en el barrio encontrareis todas las tiendas de marcas internacionales pero con un aire un poco más desenfadado e informal. En otras palabras, son como pequeñas boutiques internacionales. A mí me llamó la atención el tamaño de las tiendas ( más pequeñas que en otras zonas de Londres) y entonces lo entendí todo: no eres nadie si no estás en Notting Hill.
Aunque no vayáis a comprar nada os recomiendo que entreis en la espectacular tienda que el diseñador británico Paul Smith tiene en el barrio o veais las cientos de maquinas de coser que tienen en All Saints. Espectacular.
From Notting Hill Gate tube station to Chepstow Villas: Don’t be in too much of a hurry to get to the main section of the markets or you’ll miss some of the best antique and second-hand shops, character-filled pubs, beautiful houses and even a Banksy (or perhaps just Banksyesque) piece. Instead of getting swept up with the crowds, take some time to stop in the shops along Pembridge Road and the first stretch of Portobello Road. My favourite is Hirst Antiques, the windows of which are positively dripping in jewels. Look out for incredible designer pieces among the piles of bling. You should go to Paul Smith and All Saints´s stores to see their spectacular decorations as well. I love them.
Como habéis visto Notting Hill merece la pena. Si viviese en Londres elegiría este barrio para pasar una temporada más larga aquí. Me encanta que a tan sólo unos metros del bullicioso centro se esconda este reducto que irradia silencio, tranquilidad y una estética tan particular. Dar un paseo por Notting Hill te hace olvidar que estás en una de las ciudades más vibrantes del mundo; en Londres.
As you see there’s a reason why so many films are set in Notting Hill. The neighborhood’s cobblestoned streets weave through scrunched alleyways and richly furnished Victorian townhomes, and its stylish shops and passionate antique vendors satiate design-driven appetites—Notting Hill’s famed Portobello Road Market is a rummager’s delight. Celebrated as much for its idyllic streetscapes as it is for its cafe lifestyle and ephemeral fancies, it’s easy to understand Notting Hill's cinematic celebrity.
