Pocas veces tiene uno la oportunidad de ver cómo se pinta un barrio ( o al menos parte) en cuestión de horas. Eso es lo que ocurrió el pasado domingo en Malasaña donde más de un centenar de artistas plasmaron su arte en escaparates, cristaleras y cierres de algunos locales de este barrio madrileño.
Así que hasta allí me fui para disfrutar de todo ese derroche de creatividad y fantasía que ha convertido a Malasaña en una galería al aire libre del más puro genuino arte urbano.
Rarely I have the chance to see how a neighborhood (or at least part of it) is being painted in a matter of hours. That is what happened last Sunday in Malasaña, the hipster madrilean neighborhood, where more than one hundred artists created their art in storefronts, windows and closures of some locals of this beautiful area.
So there I went to enjoy all that waste of creativity and fantasy that has turned to Malasaña in a gallery of pure genuine outdoor urban art.
Como veis las creaciones son de lo más variopinto y es que los artistas que han participado en esta edición han sido escogidos a través de un concurso abierto. El jurado ha tenido en cuenta la trayectoria de los artistas y sus diferentes disciplinas. Lo que pretendían crear es un amplio abanico con diferentes vertientes donde no han faltado ilustradores, diseñadores gráficos y pintores de estudio.
El fin es atraer visitantes a las calles de Malasaña deseosos de ver cómo fachadas y cierres de locales cobran vida y, por supuesto, ver a los artistas en su proceso de creación.
As you can see the creations came from most varied ways and the artists who have participated in this edition have been chosen through an open competition. The jury has taken their trajectory and different disciplines. What they intended to create is a wide range with different slopes where there have been no lack of illustrators, graphic designers and studio painters.
The purpose is to attract visitors to the streets of Malasaña eager to see how facades and closures of local come alive and, of course, see the artists in their creation process.
Cuando llegué al barrio sobre las 11:00 casi todos los artistas estaban comenzando a trabajar, así que la mayoría de las fotos que saqué son de obras sin terminar aunque lo más interesante sin duda es pararse un rato y observarles en silencio plasmar su creatividad con los diferentes materiales que utilizan; desde sprays hasta estampaciones, pasando por pinceles o rotuladores.

Sé que hay mucha gente que ve este tipo de manifestación artística como una forma de “ensuciar” las ciudades. A mi juicio hay que diferenciar un simple grafitti del arte urbano, algo que pretende comunicarse con el espectador en las calles a través de los colores, las sensaciones y las formas; un arte que pretende hacerte pensar y reflexionar sobre el mundo en qué vivimos.
En definitiva, una excusa más para visitar el maravilloso barrio de Malasaña.
I know there are many people who may see this kind of artistic manifestation as a way to "dirty" cities. In my opinion, it is necessary to differentiate a simple graffiti of urban art, something that tries to communicate with the spectator on the streets through colors, sensations and forms. An type of art that aims to make you think and reflect on the world in which we live in.
In short, one more excuse to visit the wonderful Malasaña neighborhood.
