Conocía algunas islas griegas pero nunca antes había estado en las Cícladas en pleno Mar Egeo. Y se lo tengo que agradecer a Eliana y Vasillis por invitarnos a su maravillosa boda en Sifnos, la isla donde se conocieron y donde se casaron este verano
La llaman isla de luz, hogar de Apolo, paraíso de poetas, cocineros y ceramistas, tierra de los senderos misteriosos, joya de las Cícladas. Sifnos es la isla griega más elegante y secreta del Egeo. Bañada por un mar turquesa inimaginable, ha sido refugio tradicional de intelectuales y artistas en busca de la paz esencial y cautivadora de su aire.
Y desde luego a mi me cautivó desde el principio. Así que como os prometí este post va dedicado a vosotros: los recién casados Eliana y Vasillis y a vuestra preciosa isla de Sifnos.
I already knew a few Greek islands but I’ve never been in the Cyclades in The Egeo Sea and I should thank it to Eliana and Vasillis for inviting us to their fantastic wedding in Sifnos, a wonderful island just in the middle of the Cyclades. The place where they first met and finally got married.
Sifnos has a dreamlike quality. A string of three whitewashed villages, anchored by the capital Apollonia, sit like pearls along the crest of the island. The changing light kisses the landscape and as you explore the flanking slopes of the central mountains you’ll discover abundant terraced olive groves, almond trees, oleander and aromatic herbs. Each of the island’s bays harbours a spectrum of aqua waters, and offers breathtaking vistas.
All of that seduced me from the beginning. So, as I promise, this post is dedicated to you, Eliana and Vasillis, the just married couple and your beautiful island.
Sifnos es la gran desconocida de las Cícladas. Sus hermanas mayores ( Mykonos, Santorini, Paros etc) son mucho más conocidas y también más turísticas. No sé vosotros pero a mi me gusta sentirme en los sitios como un local y así me lo hicieron sentir los habitantes de esta isla tan amables y dispuestos a todo.
La isla tiene forma de triángulo y es famosa desde la antigüedad por la riqueza en oro y plata presente en sus minas. Pintorescos molinos de viento y no menos de 365 iglesias y capillas cubren Sifnos como si fueran pequeñas setas blancas.
A surprisingly green island for the Cyclades, Sifnos offers a good variety of peace and quiet and things to do. Even though it is a popular island, both amongst Greeks and foreigners, it has kept its originality and is resisting the commercialisation many other islands have suffered. The locals on Sifnos live off agriculture, the natural source of aluminium and tourism, and the olive trees grow practically everywhere. In ancient times it was famous for mining gold, silver and iron. A striking feature of this island is the many churches: there is a church for each day of the year, and most of them are only open on that day.
A poco mas de media hora de Sifnos está Milos, la otra gran desconocida de las Cícladas Griegas. A pesar de estar tan cerca no tienen nada que ver la una con la otra. Milos es volcánica y creo que eso da cierto carácter. La isla es la tierra de Afrodita para los romanos o de Venus para los antiguos griegos, en otras palabras, la isla de los enamorados. Y eso es lo que más verás; cientos de parejitas cogidas de la mano, caminando por la playa, cenando tranquilos... Es una pena que la estatua de la diosa ( la famosa Venus de Milos) no esté aquí sino en el Louvre de París.
La isla no ha sido aún asaltada por el turismo de masas lo que la hace un verdadero diamante en bruto que capturará vuestro alma para siempre con sus playas, únicas y fascinantes, todas ellas diferentes entre sí.
Just half an hour from Sifnos is Milos.This island has really stolen my heart. I absolutely fell in love with it the very moment I set foot on it. The island of Milos is a green island with many different colours in both its rocks and in its nature. There are vulcanic rocks with shades of white, red, pink, orange and green that look different at different times of the day and there are fields filled with flowers in white, red, yellow and purple. Special butterflies fly over the fields.
Milos is well known as the “lover island” it could be because “ The Aphrodite of Milos” was found here but if you want to see it you should go to Paris, incomprehensibly it is in The Louvre Museum.
Me he quedado con ganas de más. Prometo volver a las Cícladas lo más pronto que pueda, a bañarme en su Mar Egeo limpio y transparente, a comer pescado fresco, a no mirar el despertador, a hacer una visita a Antonia y Michele en Milos ( gracias por vuestra simpatía) y sobre todo a andar por sus playas a última hora del día cuando todos se han ido y sólo estamos el dios Eolo y yo.
I already miss The Cyclades and I promise to go back as soon as I can. I miss swinging in the very clean Eagan Sea, eating fresh fish every day, not looking my alarm watch, walking during sunsets in their blue beaches when all I heard is god Eolo and my thoughts at the same time. Thanks to Antonia y Michele in Milos for being so nice to us. I’ll be back for sure.
