Estoy paseando por las calles de Siena y al ver tanta belleza junta me siento privilegiado y casi mudo; tengo la sensación que el tiempo aquí se ha detenido .
Y es que andando por sus calles y plazas medievales puedo cerrar los ojos y sentir con claridad todo el peso de la historia.
Ingleses y alemanes sueñan con su bella vita toscana para su jubilación, pero para quienes nacieron aquí todo este esplendor forma parte de la cotidianeidad. Rodeados de arte e historia, las condiciones en que viven los habitantes de Siena son sorprendentes.
Pequeña y mansa, Siena es una de esas pocas ciudades que no ha sucumbido a la masificación turística y se ha quedado suspendida en la Edad Media. Impresiona sentir que cualquiera que vive dentro de sus muros duerme, estudia y hace la compra sobre piedras históricas puestas allí entre los siglos XIII y XV.
Bienvenidos a Siena, la ciudad donde el tiempo se detuvo.
I am walking through the streets of Siena and seeing so much beauty together I feel privileged and almost dumb; I have the feeling that time here has stopped.
Walking through its medieval streets and squares, I can close my eyes and clearly feel all the weight of history.
English and Germans dream of having a beautiful Tuscan life for their retirement, but for those who were born here all this magnificence is part of everyday life. Surrounded by art and history, the conditions in which the inhabitants of Siena live are surprising.
Small and tame, Siena is one of those few cities that has not succumbed to tourist overcrowding and has been suspended in the Middle Ages. It is impressive to feel that anyone who lives within its walls sleeps, studies and makes purchases on historical stones placed there between the 13th and 15th centuries.

La ciudad es pequeña (sólo tiene 55.000 habitantes) así que te va a sobrar tiempo para ver sus joyas. El Duomo, la Piazza del Campo y la Torre del Mangia están muy cerca entre entre ellas así que disfruta del camino, tómate un aperitivo, un helado ( que aquí son buenísimos) y no te preocupes si te desvías un rato de la ruta turística para entrar a las universidades.
Ve a la biblioteca de Lettere, la universidad de Filosofía y Letras donde hasta hace unos años el fallecido escritor Antonio Tabucchi impartía clases de literatura. La Universidad degli Studi di Siena es una de las más antiguas de Europa, con 772 años de actividad académica a las espaldas. Sus estudiantes reciben clases en iglesias medievales recicladas en aulas. Cuélate. Es un espacio público y verá a profesores y alumnos en clase como si nada bajo antiquísimos frescos.
El centro histórico de la ciudad está dominado por la Piazza del Campo, la plaza principal de la ciudad, donde se encuentra el Palazzo Pubblico, actual ayuntamiento, y su imponente Torre del Mangia, con 102 metros de altura. La plaza, familiarmente llamada Il Campo por los habitantes de la ciudad, es el centro social. Sea la hora que sea -gracias, en parte, a los estudiantes Erasmus-, siempre hay grupos de gente sentados, incluso tumbados, en el suelo disfrutando de unas cervezas o un helado.
Y qué decir de su maravilloso Duomo. La catedral es maravillosa tanto por dentro como por fuera. Está construida «a rayas» blancas y negras, el símbolo de la ciudad. En su interior podemos encontrar numerosas obras de artistas reconocidos como son Bernini, Donatello o Miguel Ángel.
The city is small (only 55,000 inhabitants) so you will have plenty of time to see its jewels. The Duomo, the Piazza del Campo and the Torre del Mangia are very close to each other so enjoy the walk, have an aperitif, an ice cream ( here are very good) and do not worry if you deviate a while from the tourist route to enter the universities.
Go to the Lettere library, the university of Philosophy and Letters where until a few years ago the late writer Antonio Tabucchi taught literature. The University of Siena is one of the oldest in Europe, with 772 years of academic activity behind it. Its students are taught in medieval churches recycled in classrooms. Shut up. It is a public space and you will see teachers and students in class as if nothing were happening under ancient frescoes.

Pero lejos de ser una ciudad-museo, Siena tiene fama de "supere vivere" ( de saber vivir), como demuestran sus numerosos restaurantes, bodegas y alegre vida nocturna.
Y es que si, como yo, eres un aficionados a los viajes, al arte y a la cultura, debes considerar como una excelente noticia que Siena haya cambiado tan poco en los últimos ochocientos años. Porque, como tan bien ha dicho el escritor, y miembro de la Academia francesa, Dominique Fernández:"Siena es una de esas raras ciudades en el mundo que han llevado a lo largo de los siglos una política, consciente y obstinada de apostar por la belleza".
But far from being a city-museum, Siena has a reputation for "supere vivere" (knowing how to live), as can be seen by its many restaurants, wine cellars and lively nightlife.
And if, like me, you are a fan of travel, art and culture, you should consider it as an excellent news that Siena has changed so little during the last eight hundred years. And it is like than because, as the writer and member of the French Academy, Dominique Fernández, has said so well: "Siena is one of those rare cities in the world that over the centuries have carried out a conscious and obstinate policy of betting on beauty".
