Ya sabéis que estos meses se esta celebrando una edición más de PHotoespaña y son muchísimas las muestras fotográficas que podemos disfrutar en distintos espacios de Madrid. Yo he disfrutado muchísimo por su originalidad la de artista Carmen Calvo que expone su obra en el Museo Cerralbo.
Ella ha rescatado antiguas fotografías de álbumes familiares de los años 40 y 50 encontradas en mercadillos para luego descontextualizarlas y dotarlas de nuevos significados de una forma única y muy personal. Imágenes sacadas del olvido que de esta forma adquieren una segunda vida y se cargan de otros sentidos. Algunas son muy intrigantes. A ver qué opináis vosotros.
Se llama “Quietud y Vertigo"
As you should know it is celebrating another edition of PHotoEspaña and there are many photographic exhibitions that we can enjoy in different places of Madrid. I have enjoyed very much Exhibition comprises old photographs modified by the artist Carmen Calvo. The exhibition is a part of the selection of PHotoEspaña 2018 and it is commissioned by Olivia María Rubio.
Calvo recovers old photographs from family albums (from the 40s and 50s for the most part), which she finds in street markets to later decontextualize them and offer different connotations. They are images taken from oblivion that are given a second life and are charged with new meanings.
It's called "Stillness and Vertigo"
Estaréis de acuerdo conmigo en que Carmen Calvo es una de las voces más personales y creativas del panorama artístico español y en sus trabajos fusiona técnicas y materiales sobre los que interviene para dotarlos de un nuevo significado.
La artista valenciana ha construido con su obra un mundo complejo, misterioso, no exento de humor e ironía, en el que el feminismo, la crítica social, moral y religiosa se entrelazan; en el que la interrogación sobre las formas de comportamiento y de relación entre los seres humanos es una constante.
You will agree with me that Carmen Calvo is one of the most personal and creative voices of the Spanish artistic scene and in her works merges techniques and materials on which she intervenes to give them a new meaning.
The Valencian artist has constructed with her work a complex, mysterious world, not free of humor and irony, in which feminism, social, moral and religious criticism are intertwined; in which the interrogation on the forms of behavior and of relationship between human beings is a constant.
Según la propia artista, estas imágenes han sido elegidas porque pertenecen a una época en la que España "sentía el inmovilismo y represión" de la dictadura franquista, pero que "paradójicamente" también se vivieron los primeros movimientos que reivindicaban la liberación de la mujer.
Para ello, la artista interviene sobre esas fotografías y las manipula. Las pinta, araña, añade objetos, textos y las amplia de tamaño, con el objetivo de "despertar" esas fotos antiguas y descontextualizadas de "un letargo que las sume en el anonimato", para darles una nueva vida y un nuevo significado.
Esta búsqueda del rechazo que propone la artista con collages y objetos encontrados denota la influencia de movimientos vanguardistas como el surrealismo, el dadaísmo y el pop art, sumada a la afición de la propia Carmen Calvo por el cine y directores del estilo de Luis Buñuel.
According to the artist, the images have been chosen because they belong to an era in which Spain "felt the immobility and repression" of the Franco dictatorship, but "paradoxically" also experienced the first movements that claimed the liberation of women.
To provoke it, the artist intervenes on the photographs and manipulates them. He paints them, spider, adds objects, texts and wide in size, with the aim of "awakening" those old and decontextualized photos of "a lethargy that adds them to anonymity", to give them a new life and a new meaning.
This search for rejection that the artist proposes with collages and found objects denotes the influence of avant-garde movements such as surrealism, dadaism and pop art, added to Carmen Calvo's own fondness for film and directors of Luis Buñuel's style.
"Quietud y vértigo' pone sobre la mesa cuestiones como la familia, la religión, la guerra, la infancia, la maternidad, la memoria o las relaciones entre madres e hijas, que se abordan desde el humor y la ironía con el fin de desterrar falsos mitos y convencionalismos sociales.
La exposición, como os dije al principio, estará abierta al publico en el Museo Cerralbo de Madrid hasta el próximo 16 de septiembre. Merece la pena.
"Stillness and vertigo" puts on the table issues such as family, religion, war, childhood, motherhood, memory or relationships between mothers and daughters, which are approached from humor and irony in order to banish false myths and social conventions.
The exhibition, as I told you at the beginning, will be open to the public at the Museo Cerralbo in Madrid until September 16th. Worth it to see.
