No, no es que esté la foto del cuadro demasiado ampliada, es que está pintado así a propósito. Es como vemos la realidad nosotros los miopes si no llevamos nuestras gafas o lentillas; desenfocada, difusa y cuanto más lejos más borrosa.
Así lo ha querido plasmar en sus cuadros el pintor sudafricano Philip Barlow. El artista se ha dedicado a retratar la luz en escenarios cotidianos, logrando los efectos que el ojo miope padece, es decir, la información incompleta del entorno en donde las formas y las sombras solo dan una pista de la realidad.
Las pinturas de Philip Barlow hacen que te cueste permanecer mas de un minuto viéndolas. Una forma de pintar donde las figuras y los paisajes parecen reflectores de luz bañados por luminosidad y un desenfoque para algunos exagerado que hace de estas unas obras algo único.
Working in the tradition of landscape painting, South African artist Philip Barlow creates these ethereal, abstracted oil-on-linen paintings that give the illusion of blurry, out-of-focus photographs.
The landscapes he paints are often figurative and full of city life, evoking both a familiarity and strangeness. Using this blurred effect, Barlow leaves much to the imagination of the viewer, hinting at forms and shapes and using the play of light and shadow to explore the line between the physical and the spiritual.
Barlow notes, “The figures in the landscape serve as carriers and reflectors of the light that falls upon them. Bathed in the luminosity, it is my hope that they would become more beautiful. To me, light is the ultimate subject because it embodies the pinnacle of all reality.”
