Cuando fui a conocer Zamora pasé una mañana en Toro para degustar su vino tinto fuerte y sabroso así como visitar la exposición itinerante Las Edades del Hombre que este año la podréis disfrutar en esta localidad zamorana.
Para los amantes de la historia os gustará saber que en Toro tuvieron lugar batallas decisivas en los siglos XII y XIII entre moros y cristianos, fue corte de reyes y capital de provincia en el siglo XIX. Por eso es tan monumental y de estilo mudejar. En sus calles veréis palacios espectaculares, iglesias que quitan el hipo y vistas...muchas vistas a la rica vega del Duero donde nace este vino que tiene su propia denominación de origen y no te dejará indiferente.
El vino de Toro tiene personalidad. Es fuerte, recio, con carácter. Si os gusta el tinto estaréis en el paraíso. Yo os recomiendo los vinos de la bodega Pagos del Rey. Está a las afueras de la ciudad. Tienen un museo espectacular y al final os harán una cata de vinos que no olvidaréis jamas.
When I went to Zamora I spent half day in Toro, a small city when I enjoyed its tasteful red wine and saw Las Edades del Hombre, an unique Sacred Art Exhibition. Toro is a peaceful place steeped in history giving me a glimpse of the real Spain, rugged Spain, dramatic Spain, a living, breathing museum to cultural Spain. I really enjoyed visiting this town, but then I like all Spanish towns, they seem to get under my skin and make me feel peaceful and happy.
Visiting Toro though, really stamped the local wines on my consciousness as they were very impressive.You do not have to look very hard to find wine in Toro, it is all around you. Indeed the southern part of the region is contiguous with the historic Tierra del Vino, while north of the Duero river we are in the Tierra del Pan – the two staples of traditional Spanish life within spitting distance. I went to taste some red wine at Pagos del Rey winery. It is outside town, they have a spectacular wine museum and a wine tastery you will never forget.
Todo los alrededores de Toro es tierra de vinos. Encontrarse con viñedos es algo muy normal por aquí. Toda la zona es muy llana por lo que el paisaje se vuelve tranquilo y acogedor. Tengo la impresión de que los habitantes de esta zona también viven al ritmo que les marca la propia naturaleza y eso, la verdad, lo admiro y me lo llevo como lección a aprender.
En cuanto a gastronomía os recomiendo que vayáis a disfrutarla con el estómago vacío porque los platos son abundantes, la calidad suprema y la variedad apabullante. Yo fui al restaurante Divina Proporción y cuando vuelva a Toro allí que me verán sentado de nuevo. Os recomiendo un vino de sus propias bodegas que se llama "madremía", la carrillera de cerdo y el arroz a la zamorana. Y para postre tarta casera. Un 10.
Toro has been famous as a wine region since the early middle ages, but there is plenty of evidence that the Romans made wine here too. For as long as records exist, this place has been renown for big red wines that deliver rich, concentrated fruit and hefty tannins. It was the very high alcohol of the local wines together with the massive tannins that made their reputation by ensuring they would keep in good condition and not oxidise in more primitive times when wine was kept in skins and wineries were not the scrupulously clean places they are today.
For eating out I went to a Divina Proportion Restaurant. You should try its own wine called "madremia" and ask for Zamora rice and carrillera de cerdo. As a desert any home made cake. Absolutely wonderful!
Hasta noviembre estará en Toro la exposición de arte sacro Las Edades del Hombre. Ya sabéis que es itinerante y que cada año cambia de localidad en Castilla y León y, por supuesto, de contenido.
Este año la muestra se llama "Aqua" y la podréis disfrutar en la impresionante Colegiata de la ciudad y en la Iglesia del Santo Sepulcro que están pegadas la una de la otra.
No sé si os gusta o no el arte religioso pero lo que sí es cierto es que forma parte de nuestra cultura y eso hay que respetarlo. Aunque no seais fanáticos de todo lo sacro os recomiendo que la visiteis. Todas las figuras, cuadros, ornamentos etc están expuestas con una singularidad única y una luminotecnia que os asombrará.
Las Edades del Hombre is a religious foundation that organizes different historically and culturally interesting exhibitions every year in some places around Castile and León since 1988. This year, the village of Toro is hosting its 21st edition named AQVA. It will last from the month of April until the month of November of 2016.
AQVA is the Latin word for ‘water’ and it has been chosen because of meaning a natural element that has to do with anthropology, culture and religion somehow.The water also separates Zamora into the northern part, land of bread, and the southern part, land of wine with the stream of the Duero River.
AQVA gives its name to a cultural event focused on promoting the sacred art of Castile and León. It is considered an emblematic exhibition in which some historic, artistic and religious legacy of Spanish history are shown.
Y ahora entendeis el porqué le puse el título al post de "Entre Vino y Dioses" ¿ a qué si? Porque es de lo que más vais a poder disfrutar cuando os acerqueis por Toro, de su vino y de su arte. A mi, la verdad, me faltaron horas para conocer más cosas de la localidad.
Me han dicho que la fiesta de la vendimia de la localidad este año será mas o menos a mediados de octubre. Allí estaré y os lo contaré.
I think you understand why the name " between wines and gods", because that is what you'll find in your visit in Toro; art and wine.
By the way, I was told they celebrate every single year the harvesting grapes as a local party in october. I'll be there and I'll tell you everything.
