¿A qué no sabiais que en pleno ensanche de Carabanchel se erige este imponente edificio revestido de bambú?
El sitio no tiene pérdida ya que su sola presencia destaca poderosamente entre las habituales construcciones de ladrillo que se pueden ver en las manzanas de alrededor. Es original, diferente (incluso algo magnético) , y sobre todo, respetuoso con el medio ambiente.
El edificio alberga 88 viviendas de protección oficial, es obra de los arquitectos Alejandro Zaera y Farshid Moussavi y ,como veis, rebosa bambú por sus cuatro costados. Todo esto permite el control de los rayos de sol y dota al edificio de un colchón térmico, acústico y visual que lo protege de la lluvia y el viento en invierno y de las altas temperaturas en verano. Además, una instalación de energía solar térmica provee al edificio de agua caliente.
Sin duda uno de los edificios con más personalidad propia que he visto en mi vida y que en 2008 recibió uno de los premios a la excelencia en arquitectura que concede cada año el Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).

The place has no loss as its very presence stands out powerfully among the usual brick constructions that can be seen in the surrounding blocks. It is original, different (even somewhat magnetic) , and most importantly, respectful with the environment.
The building houses 88 social housing units, is the work of architects Alejandro Zaera and Farshid Moussavi and, as you can see, it is full of bamboo along both sides. All this allows the control of sun rays and gives the building a thermal, acoustic and visual mattress that protects it from rain and wind in winter and high temperatures in summer. In addition, a thermal solar energy installation provides the building with hot water.
Without a doubt, it is one of the buildings with the most personality of its own that I have seen in my life and which in 2008 was awarded by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) as one of the prizes for excellence in architecture.
Nada más verlo te das cuenta que estas delante de uno de los edificios más singulares de todo Madrid.
Desde fuera parece que el edificio no tiene ventanas, pues a simple vista es sólo un cubo de bambú, pero conforme uno se va acercando puede distinguir las contraventanas articuladas.
Las viviendas son pequeñas, pero cuentan con todas las comodidades, incluso con una terraza de 1.50 metros de ancho, en las fachadas este y oeste, y balcones de 0.50 metros en las fachadas norte y sur.
Todas las viviendas tienen fachadas a ambos lados del bloque, lo que permite una ventilación cruzada, ideal para el caluroso verano madrileño. Tanto dentro de las viviendas como fuera se ha dado preferencia a los materiales naturales.
Y aunque parezca lo contrario, las viviendas ocupan tan sólo un 38% de la parcela. Deja el resto libre para zonas de juego y vegetación, huyendo también de la habitual fórmula de manzana cerrada. Los muros que cierran los aparcamientos subterráneos son vegetales, recubiertos de hierba, el jardín vertical sustituye así también a los muros de hormigón que hubieran sido la solución habitual.
Todo está orientado en esta arquitectura hacia la imagen de lo sostenible, de las nuevas soluciones que permiten materiales más naturales.
As soon as you see it you realize that you are in front of one of the most unique buildings in Madrid.
From the outside it seems that the building has no windows, because at first sight it is just a bamboo cube, but as you get closer you can distinguish the articulated shutters.
The houses are small, although they have all the amenities, including a terrace of 1.50 meters wide on the east and west facades, and balconies of 0.50 meters on the north and south facades.
All the houses have facades on both sides of the block, which allows for cross ventilation, ideal for the hot Madrid summer. Both inside and outside the houses, preference has been given to natural materials.
And even if it seems otherwise, the houses occupy only 38% of the plot. It leaves the rest free for playgrounds and vegetation, escaping also the usual formula of closed block. The walls that close the subway parking lots are vegetable, covered with grass, the vertical garden replaces the concrete walls that would have been the usual solution.
All this architecture is oriented towards the image of sustainability, new solutions that allow more natural materials.
Este edificio es muestra que cuando se quiere hacer las cosas bien, se puede hacer sin problemas. El dinero aquí ha sido lo de menos; de hecho esta obra social se hizo para jóvenes de menos de 35 años, que vivían con sus padres en un 75% de los casos, y con ingresos entre 1,5 y 2,5 veces el salario mínimo interprofesional. Por sus casas pagaron entre 86.400 y 150.000 euros, por pisos de 1 a 4 dormitorios.
Sin duda lo mas importante son las ganas de innovar y de hacer proyectos bonitos como esta maravillosa casa de bambú.
That building proves how things can be done well when everything is right. In fact, this social work was done for young people under 35 years old, who lived with their parents in 75% of the cases, and with an income between 1.5 and 2.5 times the minimum interprofessional salary. For their houses they paid between 86,400 and 150,000 euros, for apartments from 1 to 4 bedrooms.
