Si de algo no tenía ninguna duda es que en Mauricio iba a encontrar aguas turquesas y playas paradisiacas de arena fina (no hay más que googlear el lugar para descubrir cómo es el paraíso).
Lo que no me esperaba es que esta isla me sedujera por muchas otras cosas, desde su gastronomía hasta su mezcla cultural, sin olvidar a su gente, personas que acogen y te arropan desde el momento en el que pisas suelo por primera vez.
Todo huele a exótico, a tierras inexploradas, a paraíso salvaje. Aunque por supuesto hay carreteras y toda clase de infraestructuras, en Mauricio siempre hay un sentimiento de que te encuentras a punto de vivir una aventura de esas que jamás olvidas.
En esta pequeña isla ubicada en el Océano Índico siguen muy presentes las historias narradas de generación en generación de piratas, tesoros y guerras navales.
Por eso, me apunté a todas las excursiones que me ofrecían en The Residence Mauritius, para explorar la isla y allá que fui a descubrirla.
La sorpresa fue mayúscula.
If there was something I had no doubt about, it was that in Mauritius I was going to find turquoise waters and paradisiacal beaches of fine-grain sand ( you only need to google the place to discover what paradise is like).
What I didn't expect was that this island would seduce me by many other things, from its gastronomy to its cultural mix, without forgetting its people who welcome you from the moment you step into the islandl for the first time.
Everything smells exotic, unexplored lands, wild paradise. Although of course there are roads and all kinds of infrastructure, in Mauritius there is always a feeling that you are about to live an adventure that you will never forget.
On this small island in the Indian Ocean, the stories told from generation to generation of pirates, treasures and naval wars are still very much alive.
That's why I signed up for all the tours offered at The Residence Mauritius, to explore the island and there I went to discover it.
The surprise was overwhelming.
La mayoría de los turistas vienen aquí, obviamente, para disfrutar de sus playas, esas playas increíbles, llenas de palmeras, con aguas turquesas y una arena tan suave que querrías llevártela a casa. Pero en esta isla es posible disfrutar de muchas más cosas. Por ejemplo de un mercado de verduras, frutas y hortalizas a las afueras de la ciudad de Flacq que tiene lugar sólo los miércoles y domingos. Colorido, bullicioso y costumbrista, como todos los mercados, es un buen lugar para ver cómo vive la gente local y para comprar algunas artesanías o ropa (supuestamente) de marca a precios muy asequibles.
En este mercado comprobarás de primera mano que la riqueza cultural es uno de los puntos fuertes de la isla. Colonia holandesa, inglesa y francesa, durante siglos, hoy Mauricio guarda resquicios culturales de todos estos países. Te sorprenderá que aquí, casi todos los habitantes hablen inglés y francés perfectamente (algo que favorece, y mucho,la comunicación) .
Most tourists come to this country, obviously, to enjoy its beaches, incredible beaches, full of palm trees, with turquoise waters and sand so soft that you would like to take it home. But on this island it is possible to enjoy many more things. For example a market of vegetables, fruits and vegetables outside the city of Flacq that takes place only on Wednesdays and Sundays. Colorful, bustling and trendy, like all markets, it's a good place to see how local people live and to buy some (supposedly) branded handicrafts or clothes at very affordable prices.
In this market you will see first-hand that culture is one of the island's strong points. Dutch, English and French colony, for centuries, today Mauritius keeps cultural traces of all these countries. You will be surprised that here, almost all the inhabitants speak English and French perfectly (something that favors, and much, the communication).
Cuando andes de excursión por la isla te vas a encontrar pequeños templos hindues casi por todas partes ( no en vano es la religión más extendida de la isla).
Merece la pena que entres y te pares a ver sus formas, sus colores y las miles de figuras que los decoran. Los templos están dedicado a las diferentes deidades del hinduismo, por lo que son muy diferentes unos de otros. El silencio y el olor a incienso lo envuelven todo.
When you visit the island you will find small Hindu temples almost everywhere ( in fact it is the most extended religion of the island).
It's worth going inside and stopping to see their shapes, their colors and the thousands of figures that decorate them. The temples are dedicated to the different goddesses of Hinduism, so they are very different from each other. Silence and the smell of incense encircle everything.
Tómate unas horas para ver Port Louis, la capital de la isla, fundada en época de los holandeses. Le quedan aún algunos edificios coloniales, un mercado muy colorido y un activo y cosmopolita paseo marítimo, el Caudan Waterfront.
La ciudad es completamente segura a cualquier hora (algo extraño en el continente africano) y, a pesar de que arquitectonicamente no es muy bonita, merece la peña recorrer a pie su pequeño centro urbano y tomarse un zumo de granadas en uno de los puestos de frutas del paseo (están buenísimos)
Take a few hours to see Port Louis, the capital of the island, founded in Dutch rule times. There are still a few colonial buildings, a colourful market and an active and cosmopolitan boulevard, the Caudan Waterfront.
The city is completely safe at any time (something odd for the African continent) and, although architecturally it is not very beautiful, it is worth to walk around its small city centre and have a pomegranate juice in one of the fruit stalls on the boulevard (they are very good).
A 11 kilómetros de Port Louis queda el Jardín Botánico de Pamplemousses, fundado en la época en la que la isla perteneció a Francia. Alberga una buena muestra de toda la flora mauriciana y de especies de otros continentes.
La idea de este abrir este botánico la tuvo un intendente francés en 1767. Él fue el que decidió importar plantas y flores de todo el globo a la isla y convertir el lugar es uno de los jardines botánicos más impresionantes del mundo, no sólo por la cantidad de especies que alberga, sino tambiénpor su belleza. Podrás encontrar centenares de plantas como nenúfares gigantes, flores de loto y, también, animales.
11 kilometres from Port Louis you will find the Botanical Garden of Pamplemousses, which was founded at the time when the island was part of France. It contains a good sample of all the Mauritian flora and species from other continents.
It was a French mayor who decided to import plants and flowers from all over the world to the island and turn it into one of the most impressive botanical gardens in the world, not only because of the number of species it contains, but also because of its beauty. You can find hundreds of plants such as giant water lilies, lotus flowers and also animals.
Como ya te comenté antes la religión predominante de Mauricio es el hinduismo. Por eso mismo es de visita obligada una excursión hacia el lago sagrado, le Grand Bassin, donde se encuentran todos los templos dedicados al dios Shiva.
Es, sin duda, uno de los lugares más interesantes del sur de la isla. En torno al lago aparece una gran estatua de Shiva y varios templos a los que los fieles hindúes (mayoritarios en la isla) acuden para hacer sus ofrendas con sus elegantes y coloridos saris y trajes, metidos en el agua hasta las rodillas. Una orgía cromática para los amantes de la fotografía o el vídeo. A finales de febrero / principios de marzo se celebra aquí el Maha Shivatree, una gran peregrinación religiosa que reúne a más de medio millón de fieles de todo el Índico.
As I told you before, the main religion of Mauritius is Hinduism. For this reason, an unforgettable excursion to the sacred lake, the Grand Bassin, where all the temples dedicated to the god Shiva are located, is a must.
It is undoubtedly one of the most interesting places in the south of the island. Around the lake stands a large statue of Shiva and several temples to which the faithful Hindus come to make their offerings with their elegant and colorful saris and costumes immersed in water to the knees. A chromatic feast for lovers of photography or video. At the end of February/beginning of March the Maha Shivatree is celebrated here, a large religious pilgrimage that gathers more than half a million faithful from all over the Indian Ocean.
Sorprende que el interior de la isla es muy verde y frondoso, no en vano es el hogar de algunas de las bellezas naturales más impresionantes del mundo. La cascada de Chamarel, ubicada en el extremo suroeste de la isla, es la más alta de la nación. Sus aguas atronadoras se alimentan de los ríos St. Denis y Viande Salée y tienen una caída de agua de 100 metros. Lo mejor de todo es que tiene unas escaleras que dan a un mirador superior. Al llegar allí, maravíllate con la vista y toma unas fotografías fantásticas del lugar.
It is remarkable that the inland is very green and leafy, not in vain it is the home of some of the most impressive natural beauties in the world. The Chamarel waterfall, located at the southwest end of the island, is the highest in the nation. Its thunderous waters feed on the rivers St. Denis and Viande Salée and have a waterfall of 100 meters. The best of all is there is a staircase leading to an upper viewpoint. When you get there, admire the view and take some fantastic pictures of the place.
Un poco más abajo de estas cascadas está La Tierra de los Siete Colores, paisaje formado por infinidad de dunas de arena de diferentes colores en medio de un frondoso bosque.
Este increíble paisaje se formó de la actividad erosiva del suelo de basalto y la combinación de sus minerales con la lluvia. Este coctel, junto con el clima cálido, favorece la descomposición de la arcilla en el exterior.
Lo que es aún más sorprendente es el hecho de que los colores están separados por capas. Es decir, si se coge tierra de cada color y se la mezcla, se acaba separando de nuevo por capas de colores.
A short distance from these waterfalls is The Land of Seven Colours, a landscape formed by an infinity of sand dunes of different colours in the middle of a leafy forest.
This incredible landscape was formed by the erosive activity of the basalt soil and the combination of its minerals with the rain. This mixture, along with the warm climate, helps the decomposition of the clay outside.
What is even more surprising is the fact that the colors are separated by layers. In other words, if you take soil from each colour and mix it, it will be separated again by layers of colours.
Y, por supuesto no te vayas de estas tierras sin:
1. Coger un catamarán y hacer snorkel cerca de la barrera de coral. Te vas s sorprender con los increíbles peces que puedes observar.
2. Practicar los muchos deportes acuáticos que ofrecen en cada una de las playas. La barrera de coral permite que las aguas sean tan tranquilas que es una opción perfecta para iniciarte con algunos deportes que hasta ahora se te han resistido.
3. Probar la cocina típica, que tiene mucho que ver con la hindú. El curry es uno de sus ingredientes estrella y lo utilzian copiosamente.
And, of course, don't leave these lands without:
1. Take a catamaran and snorkel near the coral reef. You will be surprised by the incredible fish you can observe.
2. Do some water sports on the beaches. The coral reef makes the waters so calm that it's a perfect option to start with some sports you've struggled with so far.
3. Try the typical cuisine, which has a lot to do with Hindu cuisine. Curry is one of its star ingredients and they use it extensively.
Creedme cuando os digo que Isla Mauricio es muchísimo más que sol y playa, es una experiencia increíble como en pocos destinos podrás experimentar.
En fin, yo me quedo a seguir disfrutando del lugar y del Residence Mauritius.

Believe me when I tell you that Mauritius is much more than sun and beach, it is an incredible experience as few destinations can experience.
Anyway, I will continue to enjoy the place and the Residence Mauritius.
