Ayer me escribió mi amiga Coriandro para preguntarme por dónde andaba. Le dije “ en Londres, bebiendo té” y no le engañaba porque me fui a descubrir los sitios más bonitos para comprar y degustar té. Querida amiga ,sé que tú aquí disfrutarías más que un crío en una piscina así que toma nota para cuando vengas a esta megaciudad.
Estás escaleras tan maravillosas y llenas de flores frescas están en el Fortnum and Mason, un centro comercial de tres plantas dedicado única y exclusivamente al té ( bueno, también hay algo de café pero poco, la verdad). Su fachada señorial está presidida por un reloj de tres toneladas, en el que cada hora en punto aparecen dos miniaturas humanas que representan los dos fundadores de la marca. La tienda es la proveedora de la Casa Real británica.

The Royal Family's favourite food hall, Fortnum & Mason is one of the oldest and most famous stores in Piccadilly, if not the capital. After 300 years of trading, this historic department has a pre-war gentility; its gilded furnishings and exquisitely wrapped produce offer an appealing anachronism in today's modern age of convenience. Quintessentially English, this historic department store owes its royal patronage to William Fortnum's grandson, Charles's years of service with Queen Charlotte. Still the purveyor of food and wine to the Royal Family, Fortnum's is a must-see for anyone visiting London.
En cuanto a infusiones se refiere, la marca vende más de un centenar de tés de marca propia de todos los rincones del mundo para deleite de sus fanáticos. Además, el local cuenta con una sala noble, la Diamond Jubilee Tea Salon, para gozar de un solemne afternoon tea con sus correspondientes pastas a partir de 40 libras (56 euros) por persona. Al cliente se le sugiere dejarse guiar por la experiencia del personal, al que internamente denominan tearistas. Por cierto, uno de ellos explica cómo se prepara la taza de té perfecta…maravilloso!
Opened by Messrs Fortnum and Mason in 1707, the store has supplied provisions during both the Napoleonic and Crimean wars. Despite stocking a solid range of accessories, perfumes, furniture and homeware, the shop is, understandably, famed for its fantastic, upmarket food hall piled high with gastronomic delights and adorned with chandeliers and marble pillars. Some of the delicacies here are a little overpriced but the quality is exceptionally high. If youre visiting London in the summer months and want to sink your teeth into a top-notch picnic hamper, look no further; Fortnum's has supplied hampers to high society types at events such as the Henley Regatta and the Ascot Races.
Cuando salgas del Fortnum and Mason y en la misma zona no te puedes perder la Tea Terrace del centro comercial House of Fraser. Está en la quinta planta y es lo que uno entiende por un salón de té al más puro estilo inglés multiplicado por quince. Los colores son chillones a más no poder, azul claro brillante, rosa chicle, lamparas con formas de cucharas...para mi gusto es un poco “kitsch” pero el té que sirven es estupendo ( tienen variedades exclusivas) y las tartas son clásicas y exquisitas. Las tazas, las cucharas, las teteras son de diseño único y las podéis comprar si queréis. La experiencia merece la pena.
The Tea Terrace is on the top floor of an Oxford Street department store yet feels like a delightfully quirky English tea room. In a city that adores coffee these days it's lovely to find a tea room that's modern and serves a great choice of the nation's favorite beverage. The Tea Terrace is an all day restaurant open from 9am Monday to Saturday (11am on Sundays), and there is an extensive gluten-free lunch menu too.
Lo primero que pensé al entrar en The Tea Terrace es que estaba dentro de “ Alicia en el País de las Maravillas” y que me iba a venir un conejo disfrazado de camarero.
El local funciona desde 2013 y, al parecer, surgió para reinterpretar la tradición inglesa de tomar té prácticamente a todas horas dandole un toque mucho más colorido del habitual y, ya lo veis, mucho más divertido.
Incluso si no sois fan de té aquí lo vais a probar junto a sus maravillosas tartas.
The first thought upon seeing the restaurant was "Alice in Wonderland" with the bright chairs and quirky touches such as the teaspoon light shades.
This a modern take on something traditional so there are bright pink and blue high-back Queen Anne style chairs and sofas. I thought the seating was fabric upholstery but it's actually vinyl so can be a warm on a sunny day.
The Tea Terrace uses china by Royal Albert due to its quintessential English design – the country garden and the national flower, the rose. All of the Royal Albert products used at The Tea Terrace are available to purchase either from The Tea Terrace or the Royal Albert Department on the 4th floor. It's beautiful floral design felt very elegant and just right for the setting.
Para tomar el “afternoon tea” ( o sea, el té con sandwiches y pastelitos de tres pisos que ellos beben después de comer y antes de cenar entre las 2 y las 5 de la tarde) os recomiendo uno de mis sitios preferidos de Londres: el Royal Albert Hall. El recinto es un templo de la música. Aquí han actuado cientos de cantantes, la BBC tiene su orquesta aquí de forma permanente y el lugar desprende esa magia que dan los recintos donde han tenido lugar grandes acontecimientos.
El Albert Hall ofrece además uno de los “afternoon teas” más apreciados de Londres. Os recomiendo reservarlo con antelación por teléfono o por internet porque sólo hacen una cantidad determinada al día. Lo sirven sólo entre las 2 y las 4, 30 de la tarde. Esa fue mi comida del día.

El ambiente del local es elegante y sobrio y el menú asombroso. Son exactamente 14 variedades de “pequeñas delicias” en forma de mini sandwiches, mini pastelitos de sabores únicos y, como no, el té. Puedes elegir entre más de 80 variedades y te garantizan que las hojas son de la primera recogida. ¿ Qué mas podemos pedir? La experiencia merece la pena. Si quieres te puedes apuntar a un tour por el teatro o simplemente quedarte allí a disfrutar del lugar y de la experiencia de estar en uno de los templos de la música de todo el planeta.
Y ahora ya no os quedan más excusas para disfrutar del té ¿ verdad que no?
As I told you it consisted of a selection of teas, sandwiches and pastries -and as someone who’s certainly had their fair share of afternoon teas, I can report that everything was delicious, innovative and memorable. It’s classy without being too contrived and would be the perfect way to celebrate a special occasion. Or just a week day afternoon -life’s too short to wait for special occasions, who we kidding.
I whole-heartedly recommend the champagne tour of the Royal Albert Hall and having visited this London gem, it’s been added to my list, under the guise “See a show at the RAH from the Royal Box”. Maybe I’ll only partly achieve that objective, but one can certainly try.
