Como ya os dije la semana pasada este año me voy a empapar de Navidad. Si el otro día me acerqué a ver la iluminación y el fantástico maxi abeto de 18 metros de la Plaza de España hoy me he decidido a pisar por primera vez el mercadillo de la Plaza Mayor (si, lo sé. Ya era hora)
Os tengo que confesar que no me había acercado antes por puros prejuicios. Y eso está fatal porque me ha impedido disfrutar de uno de los enclaves más curiosos y divertidos de la Navidad madrileña. Si bien es cierto que aunque nunca haya sido muy fan de las figuritas de los belenes ni de los artículos de broma, el pasear por este mercadillo lleno de esos artículos me ha hecho recordar, en cierta manera, mi infancia. Y eso, creo yo, también forma parte de la magia de la Navidad.
As I told you last week this year I'm going to immerse myself in Christmas. If the other day I went to see the lighting and the fantastic 18 meters high fir tree in Plaza de España today I decided to visit for the first time the Christmas market in Plaza Mayor (yes, I know. It was about time).
I have to confess that I had not gone there before because of pure prejudice. And that's terrible because it has prevented me from enjoying one of the most curious and fun places of Christmas in Madrid. Although it is true that I have never been a fan of nativity scene figurines or joke items, walking through this market full of these items has reminded me, in a way, my childhood. And that, I think, is also part of the magic of Christmas.
Este mercadillo navideño tiene ya más de 100 años, por él han pasado muchas generaciones de madrileños pero también de turistas de todas parte, nacionales e internacionales.
Sus característicos puestos rojos, 104 como en época prepandemia, llenarán la espectacular Plaza Mayor de Madrid de artículos y accesorios navideños hasta el 31 de diciembre. Su horario es de 10:00 a 21:00 horas de lunes a jueves y de 10:00 a 22:00 horas viernes, sábado y en vísperas de festivo. Si vais por la tarde-noche puede que lo encontréis un poco hasta arriba de gente ya que muchos se acercan a última hora para disfrutar de las luces de colores y del ambiente navideño. Yo fui al mediodía y me encontré el mercado tranquilo aunque lleno de turistas.
This Christmas market is more than 100 years old and has been visited by many generations of locals and tourists from all over the world, both national and international.
Its characteristic red stalls, 104 as in the pre-pandemic season, will fill the spectacular Plaza Mayor of Madrid with Christmas items and accessories until December 31. Its opening hours are from 10:00 to 21:00 hours from Monday to Thursday and from 10:00 to 22:00 hours Friday, Saturday and on holiday eves. If you go in the afternoon-evening you may find it a bit crowded as many people come late to enjoy the colorful lights and the Christmas atmosphere. I went at noon and found the market a bit quiet but full of tourists.
Un poco de historia
Los inicios de este tradicional evento navideño se remontan al siglo XVII cuando comenzó a hacerse popular un mercado de Navidad en la vecina plaza de Santa Cruz. Por aquella época, los vendedores llevaban al mercado fundamentalmente alimentos, animales para criar en el hogar (pavos y pollos vivos) y, poco a poco, se empezaron a añadir elementos de decoración como adornos, flores y regalos de gran tradición en los países europeos de nuestro entorno. Desde la plaza de Santa Cruz, el mercado se fue extendiendo a otras calles que actualmente conforman el distrito de Centro. Comenzando en Arenal, atravesaba la plaza Mayor para llegar a la calle de Toledo, Puerta Cerrada y las Cavas.
De ahí hasta nuestros días este mercado ha variado muchísimo, la última modificación se ha centrado en la modernización de los puestos. En la década de los 80, los toldos tradicionales desde sus inicios dieron paso a las casetas de madera. Las de los últimos años tienen un diseño más europeo, acorde con los mercadillos navideños de los países nórdicos: casetas de madera roja con tejados puntiagudos.
A bit of history
The beginnings of this traditional Christmas event date back to the 17th century when a Christmas market began to become popular in the nearby Santa Cruz square. At that time, traders brought to the market mainly food, animals to raise at home (live turkeys and chickens) and, little by little, began to add decorative elements such as ornaments, flowers and gifts of great tradition in the European countries around us. From the Plaza de Santa Cruz, the market was extended to other streets that currently make up the Centro district. Beginning in Arenal, it crossed the Plaza Mayor to reach the streets of Toledo, Puerta Cerrada and Las Cavas.
From then until today this market has changed a lot, the last modification has focused on the modernization of the stalls. In the 80's, the traditional awnings from the beginning gave way to wooden booths. Those of recent years have a more European design, according to the Christmas markets of the Nordic countries: red wooden booths with pointed roofs.
Este de la Plaza Mayor tiene su encanto pero si queréis conocer otros mercados de Navidad en Madrid yo os recomendaría el de la Plaza Isabel II especializado en dulces de temporada, el de Artesanía del Paseo del Prado, el de Madrid Río con su magnífico carrusel y el de la Plaza Juan Goytisolo para disfrutar de sus pistas de hielo.

This one in Plaza Mayor has charm but if you want to know other Christmas markets in Madrid I would recommend the one in Plaza Isabel II specialized in seasonal sweets, the Craft Market in Paseo del Prado, the one in Madrid Rio with its magnificent carousel and the one in Plaza Juan Goytisolo to enjoy its ice rinks.
