Está en Rotterdam Holanda y GUAU será la primera palabra que digas cuando veas el Markthal, el nuevo e impresionante megamercado de la ciudad. Pasado el primer shock al ver algo tan suntuoso ( y de no parar de hacer fotos) me concentré en el mercado en sí ( ya conocéis mi obsesión por la comida sana) Bueno, pues no lo conseguí.
Todo en el Markthal es abrumador; hay restaurantes de todo tipo de comida, tiendas y...( aquí viene lo bueno) apartamentos. Sí, si, habéis leído bien. Detrás de esos techos llenos de frutas y verduras vive gente. Su forma, colorido interior y altura lo convierten en todo un espectáculo.
It's in Rotterdam, Holand and Wow!! This is what you feel when entering Rotterdam Markthal. It is overwhelming. The art at the very large ceiling is absolutely impressive with gigantic colourful flowers, butterflies, beetles and other living things. People have their necks up, staring at it, taking pictures and wondering. And I could not stop doing the same.
The building has somehow the shape of a platform horseshoe or as one blogger put it: it looks like a large Quonset hut. For the street food lovers there are many opportunities to get a lunch bite. For those wanting a full menu there are also restaurants, but I did not have a deeper look into them. They seemed to look like typical modern ones, some on the first floor allowing to better obeserve the market buzz.
El edificio es atemporal y no sigue ninguna moda, lo que supone un complemento para la ciudad de Rotterdam Todos los comerciantes que alquilan puestos han aceptado las condiciones de sostenibilidad establecidas en los llamados ‘Green Lease Agreements’, desde limitaciones para instalaciones que usan agua hasta la utilización de materiales saludables en las tiendas. La sostenibilidad no se limita pues solo al edificio, sino que llega hasta las propias tiendas.
This €175m conjuring trick is the work of MVRDV, leaders of the wave of “Superdutch” architects that emerged in the Netherlands in the 1990s, spawned from Rem Koolhaas’s Office of Metropolitan Architecture. Driven by poppy polemic, their projects are characterised by improbable structural feats, executed with cartoonish glee. These are “look, no hands!” buildings, where slabs appear to float and towers teeter on the brink of toppling; architectural circus acts that are often dressed up in accordingly garish garb.
El enorme techo abovedado ha sido revestido con un impresionante y colorido mural digital de 11000 m² y 4500 piezas de aluminio perfectamente ensambladas. El mural ha sido diseñado por los artistas Arno Coenen e Iris Roskam y ha sido bautizado con el nombre “El cuerno de la abundancia”. Te da la impresión de estar bajo un cielo de frutas, verduras y flores. Por la noche, iluminado, se ve, si cabe, aún más bonito. Según los diseñadores, a la hora de construir este impresionante edificio se inspiraron en los mercados cerrados españoles, como La Boquería en Barcelona o San Miguel en Madrid.
Markthal draws inspiration from food markets in Barcelona, Valencia and Stockholm. Market vendors will offer a diverse range of regional and international products such as fresh fish, poultry, cheeses, coffee, vegetables and fruit, besides a crockery- and a wine shop. Next to the sales units, ‘The World of Taste’, a center for education, information and innovation in the field of healthy eating and the museum ‘The Time Stair’ aim to engage the visitors in the history of food and its development. The Time Stair is a permanent exhibition along the central staircase of Markthal which will showcase the archeological finds discovered during the site excavation.
A primera vista parece que el mercado esta hecho más para impresionar que para comprar o como un atractivo turístico más de Rotterdam; pues no, los productos son muy variados, frescos y de gran calidad. Esperemos que el Markthal sea un revulsivo para que los holandeses se animen a cocinar y le den un poco de sabor a su gastronomía que, la verdad, no se caracteriza por ser una de las mejores del mundo.
The building is a new statement in the urban structure of Rotterdam with its high diversity of icons from the days of reconstruction and urban renewal, but also some new buildings that have been realised over the last years. It is in line with the city’s ambition to house more people in the centre and to raise the life quality in post-industrial Rotterdam through a series of large scale projects and countless bottom-up projects. The combination of styles of architecture forms an excellent environment for the spectacular design of Markthal.
¿A qué por fuera parece la nave extraterrestre de "V" cuando invadieron la tierra? Bueno, fuera de bromas es un edificio impresionante. Se tardó más de 10 años en construirse y hubo mucha polémica por el diseño y el extracoste.
Algunos no dudan en calificar al Markthal como "la mayor obra de arte moderno del mundo" y otros como "la Capilla Sixtina" de Rotterdam. Yo no me atrevería a tanto, sólo os animo a verlo por vosotros mismos y que lo valoréis.
Somehow I could not get rid of the feeling that I was entering a candy store: my eyes got wide open like a child. Later I realized that somehow things seem a bit artificial, lacking to a certain degree a “classic” market ambiance. Nevertheless it probably offers a successful new concept for small businesses to thrive in competition with supermarkets. But anyway it is worth to visit and assess for yourself.
