Dicen que no hay mejor manera de encontrarse a uno mismo y escuchar nuestra voz interior que encerrarse en uno de esos lugares mágicos, cargados de historia y estar rodeados de naturaleza. Para mi ese lugar estos dos ha sido el monasterio de Santo Estevo, en plena Ribeira Sacra de Galicia.
Y no es que yo me encuentre perdido ni me haya entrado la vocación así de repente, es que el antiguo monasterio es ahora uno de los mejores Paradores para disfrutar de tranquilidad, buena gastronomía y alejarme del bullicio de Madrid. Así que allí me fui a pasar unos días.
Santo Estevo es paz y sosiego, un lugar en el que desconectar del mundo, respirar hondo y reponer fuerzas. La luz tenue que ilumina el complejo es acompañada de una música religiosa a volumen muy bajo. Todo está preparado para que, en esencia, siga siendo un monasterio.
They say that there is no better way to find oneself and listen to our inner voice than locking oneself in one of those magical places, full of history and surrounded by nature. For me that place last weekend was the monastery of Santo Estevo, in the Ribeira Sacra of Galicia.
Bur relax, I din’t feel lost or something like that or suddenly found a religious vocation , it’s just that old monastery is now one of the best Hotel in the area to enjoy tranquility, good food to get away from the bustle of Madrid. So I went there to spend a few days .
Santo Estevo is peace and serenity, a place where you can disconnect from the world, breathe deeply and regain strength. The dim light that illuminates the complex is accompanied by religious music at a very low volume. Everything is prepared so that, in essence, it remains a monastery.
Las antiguas dependecias monacales son un regalo para los amantes de la arquitectura. El parador combina los estilos barroco y románico y cuenta con tres enormes claustros, uno románico, uno gótico y otro renacentista. Podrás sentirte como un auténtico monje de la época dando vueltas en círculo por cada uno de ellos mientras meditas.
Desde el primer momento en el que pisas el parador sientes algo distinto, una mezcla de respeto y embrujo. Imponen las tumbas que conforman el pequeño cementerio que hay a la entrada, su piedra de apariencia siempre mojada con tonos verdes y los recovecos que nunca sabes hacia qué lugar te llevarán
This stunning Parador, 28km from the town of Ourense and approximately equidistant between Santiago and Vigo, is in a former Benedictine monastery, one of the oldest in Galicia, tracing its origins to the 6th century and declared a Historic-Artistic Monument in 1923. The monastery buildings stand four-square on a wooded hillside, with magnificent views out over the surrounding landscape, an area known as the Ribeira Sacra. The carefully restored and preserved buildings have Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque elements, and notable features include a monumental staircase and three cloisters, one in each style.
Several of the bedrooms have fine views down to the River Sil, and the bar is situated in one of the cloisters. At the Parador's restaurant you can dine on the patio in fine weather and sample such local dishes as Cocido (a stew made with garbanzo beans), Empanada Gallega (Galician stuffed pastry) and fresh fish from the River Sil.
¿Cuál es el secreto del éxito de Santo Estevo? Arte, historia, naturaleza, tranquilidad y gastronomía acaparan el protagonismo mientras alguna que otra meiga sirve para envolver de misterio el edificio y los majestuosos bosques que lo rodean.
El parador organiza (no siempre) una visita nocturna teatralizada en la que un “monje" de la época cuenta las historias más interesantes que han sucedido bajo esos muros. Siempre con poca luz y un poco de frío, el “monje” juega con el misterio, con las meigas y con las costumbres de la época. Al final nos regala una deliciosa quemada que, la verdad, sienta estupendamente.

This Benedictine monastery is located in the middle of the Ribeira Sacra - an area of outstanding natural beauty where the rivers Miño and Sil meet. It is one of Galicia’s monastic centres. The existence of the Monastery has been proven in the 10th century, although its origins appear to be in the 6th and 7th centuries, and curiously it has three remarkable and distinct cloisters (Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance). The building was declared a Historic and Artistic Monument in 1923.
A popular day excursion in the area is a catamaran cruise along the river in the valley, as well as extensive walking routes.
