Viajar a las Azores es toda una caja de sorpresas. Ya os conté la semana pasada mi visita a una plantación de té a los pies del volcán de la isla de San Miguel y hoy os quiero llamar la atención sobre estas llamativas capillas que se encuentran a lo largo y ancho de otra isla, la de Terceira.
La isla se llama así por ser la tercera en ser descubierta en el año 1427. Es la más desarrollada de la parte central del archipiélago y esto se debe, en parte, a la base militar americana de Lajes, está operativa desde la II Guerra Mundial y que es famosa por ser sede de la llamada Cumbre de las Azores en 2003 entre los entre los expresidentes Bush, Blair y Aznar que derivó en la posterior guerra de Irak.
La base, por supuesto, no se puede visitar pero si estas coloridas capillas que verás repartidas por toda la isla. Allí las llaman "Imperios" y son el centro de la festividad de Espíritu Santo, una importantísima fiesta local establecida por los primeros pobladores de la isla, que rezaban al Espíritu Santo para que les protegiese de los desastres naturales.
Llaman la atención por su colorido y belleza.
Traveling to the Azores is a box of surprises. Last week I told you about my visit to a tea plantation in the foothills of a volcano on the island of São Miguel and today I want to draw your attention to these striking chapels that are located throughout the length and breadth of another island, the island of Terceira.
The island is so named because it was the third to be discovered in 1427. It is the most developed of the central part of the archipelago and this is due, in part, to the American military base of Lajes, which has been operational since World War II and is famous for hosting the so-called Azores Summit in 2003 between former presidents Bush, Blair and Aznar that led to the subsequent war on Iraq.
The base, of course, can not be visited but you can see these colorful chapels scattered all over the island. There they are called "Imperios" and are the center of the Holy Spirit festivity, a very important local holiday established by the first settlers of the island, who prayed to the Holy Spirit to protect them from natural disasters.
They are striking for their color and beauty.
El culto al Espíritu Santo es una celebración muy particular de las Azores que tiene lugar entre el domingo de Pascua y Pentecostés o Trinidad, en la que se corona a un emperador, se hacen procesiones y se reparte un bodo u ofrenda de pan con carne y en ocasiones legumbres.
En el marco de las celebraciones, los imperios son el epicentro y corazón de las fiestas. Aquí se exponen y guardan la corona y el cetro del emperador. Y aunque los imperios no son exclusivos de Terceira, en esta isla tienen su máxima expresión por su colorido y abundancia.
The worship to the Holy Spirit is a very particular celebration of the Azores that takes place between Easter Sunday and Pentecost or Trinity, in which an emperor is crowned, processions are held and a bodo or offering of bread with meat and sometimes vegetables is distributed.
Within the framework of the celebrations, the empires are the epicenter and heart of the festivities. Here the emperor's crown and scepter are displayed and kept. And although the empires are not exclusive to Terceira, on this island they have their maximum expression due to their color and abundance.
Los imperios de Terceira son una de las mejores cosas que ver en la isla. Están, literalmente, por todos los rincones, al igual que sus alucinantes piscinas naturales. Hay tantos que casi parece que los barrios compiten entre ellos para ver quién tiene el más bonito o el más trabajado.Es difícil escoger entre ellos pues todos tienen un colorido muy atractivo y unas formas llamativas.
No os creáis que se encuentran en el centro del pueblo o en lugares inaccesibles, se ven en los lugares más inesperados; desde un cruce de caminos hasta una esquina cualquiera. Todos están cerrados por lo que es imposible acceder al interior, tendréis que pegar la nariz a la ventana si queréis ver algo.
Terceira's empires are one of the best things to see on the island. They are literally everywhere, as well as its amazing natural pools. There are so many that it almost seems that the neighborhoods compete with each other to see who has the most beautiful or the most elaborate, it is difficult to choose between them because they all have a very attractive color and striking shapes.
Don't think that they are in the center of town or in inaccessible places, they can be seen in the most unexpected places; from a crossroads to a corner. All of them are closed so it is impossible to access the inside, you will have to stick your nose to the window if you want to see something.
