Pocas esculturas estremecen tanto como estas. La primera vez que las vi fue, por casualidad, en algún programa de televisión que ni ahora mismo no recuerdo y hoy por fin que las veo en persona pienso que el viaje hasta aquí ha merecido la pena.
Son cuatro figuras humanas que representan la memoria de los olvidados de la Guerra Civil y la posterior dictadura y represión franquista así como a todas aquellas personas que fueron encarceladas, torturadas, exiliadas o desplazadas durante esa época. Las figuras están formadas por una mujer, un anciano y dos hombres jóvenes, hechas a tamaño real y situadas en el borde de un mirador en el pequeño pueblo de El Torno, sobre grandes piedras de granito y desde el que se ve todo el maravilloso Valle del Jerte, en Cáceres.
Las figuras parecen andar confundidas, mirando al infinito, como perdidas o vagabundeando por senderos que no conocen. Esa era el mensaje de la obra del escultor Francisco Cedenilla y, sin duda, lo ha conseguido.
El solo mirarlas estremece.
Very few sculptures are so moving as these ones. The first time I saw them was, by chance, on some television program that I don't even remember right now, and today I finally see them firsthand and I think that my journey here has been worthwhile.
They are four human figures that represent the memory of people forgotten during the Spanish Civil War and the following Franco's dictatorship and repression, as well as all those people who were imprisoned, tortured, exiled or displaced during that period. They are made up of a woman, an old man and two young men, made to real size and located on the edge of a lookout point in the small town of El Torno, on large granite stones and from which you can see the whole wonderful Valle del Jerte, in Cáceres.
The figures seem to be walking around in confusion, looking at the infinite, as if they were lost or wandering along paths they don't know. That was the message of the work of the sculptor Francisco Cedenilla and, without a doubt, he has achieved it.
Just looking at them makes you tremble.
Se tardó 3 años en terminar la obra, finalizando en diciembre de 2008 e inaugurándose el 24 de enero de 2009. Pocas horas después de dicha inauguración, 3 de las 4 personas (las que representan a hombres) sufrieron disparos de arma de caza, produciéndose así agujeros. Resulta impactante que unas figuras que representan a los fusilados y muertos en la guerra y dictadura, hayan sufrido un acto así. El propio autor dijo que no quería que se reparara la obra, dejándola así, demostrando que el odio y el rencor dura más de lo que se piensa.
La obra de Cedenilla, fue colacada con la ayuda de la Asociación Comarcal de Jóvenes del Valle del Jerte y aparece en "El silencio de los otros" un documental de 2018, dirigido por Almudena Carracedo y Robert Bahar, que retrata la lucha silenciada de las víctimas de la dictadura.
El mirador de la memoria es un grito silencioso en medio de la inmensidad. Un golpe certero contra el olvido.
It took 3 years to complete the project, which was finished in December 2008 and inaugurated on January 24, 2009. A few hours after the inauguration, 3 of the 4 people (those representing men) were shot by hunting guns, leaving holes in the artworks. It is shocking that some figures representing people who were shot and killed in the war and dictatorship, have suffered such injustice. The author himself said that he did not want to repair the work, leaving it like that, showing that hatred and bitterness lasts longer than people think.
Cedenilla's work was made possible thanks to the support of the Valle del Jerte Regional Youth Association and appears in "The Silence of Others", a documentary from 2018, directed by Almudena Carracedo and Robert Bahar, which portrays the silenced struggle of the victims from the dictatorship.
The Mirador de la Memoria is a silent cry in the midst of immensity. A sure strike against amnesia.
Cómo llegar hasta allí:
Está en la carretera comarcal CC-51 que une la Nacional 110 con El Torno, a unos 2km del municipio.
Desde Plasencia, unos 15km dirección norte, por la carretera Nacional 110 pasando el km 388, hay indicaciones a la izquierda dirección a El Torno, que está a 6km del cruce, por la CC-51.
Desde Navaconcejo, Cabezuela del Valle o Tornavacas, tirar por la nacional 110 dirección sur, hasta que entre el km 387 y 388, aparece un desvío a la derecha dirección El Torno por la CC-51.
Para llegar desde Cabezabellosa o Rebollar, la mejor opción es llegar desde aquí a El Torno y posteriormente buscar la salida dirección la Nacional 110.
How to get there:
It is on the CC-51 regional road that joins the National 110 with El Torno, about 2km from the town.
From Plasencia, about 15km north, on the National road 110 passing km 388, there are signs to the left towards El Torno, which is 6km from the crossroads, on the CC-51.
From Navaconcejo, Cabezuela del Valle or Tornavacas, take the National 110 towards the south, until between km 387 and 388, there is a detour to the right towards El Torno on the CC-51.
To get from Cabezabellosa or Rebollar, the best option is to get from here to El Torno and then look for the exit to the National 110.
