Si estos días paseas por la Gran Vía de Madrid para ver como ha quedado la remodelación de esta icónica vía de la capital, no dejes de visitar “Faceless”, la nueva exposición de la artista madrileña Coco Dávez.
La podrás ver en otro emblemático lugar madrileño; el maravilloso Hotel Emperador que ha reconvertido su vestíbulo en el Lobby Art Gallery, un espacio único para disfrutar del mejor arte contemporáneo y, de paso, de vistas a la Gran Vía.
¿ Qué es lo que vas a encontrar? Pues el homenaje de Coco Cávez a sus ídolos de la cultura del siglo XX con mucha estética pop y neorealista.
Faceless son retratos basados en la simplicidad de las formas y la combinación de colores puros, que buscan captar la esencia personal de cada personaje. El rostro desaparece para representar la energía del retratado.
Te va a sorprender.
If one of these days you walk along Gran Vía in Madrid to see the remodeling of this emblematic street, do not miss visiting "Faceless", the new exhibition of Coco Dávez.
You can see it in another emblematic place in Madrid; the wonderful Hotel Emperador that has converted its lobby into the Lobby Art Gallery, a unique space to enjoy the best contemporary art and, in passing, views of the Gran Vía.
What are you going to find there? Well, the tribute of Coco Dávez to her idols of twentieth century culture with a lot of pop and neorealist aesthetics.
“Faceless" are portraits based on the simplicity of the shapes and the combination of pure colors, which seek to capture the personal essence of each character. The face disappears to represent the energy of the portrayed.
It will surprise you.
¿A qué reconocéis a todos los retratados aunque no les veáis las caras? Pues es gracioso porque surgió de un error. Al parecer Coco levaba años sin pintar en acrílico y pincel. Hacía poco que se había leído 'Éramos unos niños' de Patti Smith y estaba fascinada con la figura de la autora, así que quiso homenajearla haciéndole un retrato de una fotografía en la que sale muerta de risa con unas flores en la cabeza.
El resultado fue tan desastroso que le dio un brochazo rojo en la cara y comenzó a rellenar los espacios para que no se fuera tanta pintura a la basura. Y fue ahí como se le encendió la bombilla, de pronto seguía viendo a Patti sin verle la cara. Días más tarde probó con David Lynch, Picasso y Frida y ahí comenzó la diversión.
El resultado, como veis, es asombroso y muy divertido.
Do you recognize all the portrayed people even if you do not see their faces, don’t you? Well, it's funny because it came from an error. Apparently Coco took years without painting in acrylic and brush. She had recently read 'We were children' by Patti Smith and was fascinated by the figure of the author, so he wanted to pay tribute to her by making a portrait of a photograph in which she comes out laughing with flowers on her head. The result was so disastrous that she gave it a red brush to the face and began to fill in the spaces so that not so much paint was left in the trash. And that was the moment when the light went on, suddenly she was still seeing Patti without seeing her face. Days later she tried out with David Lynch, Picasso and Frida and that's where the fun started. The result, as you can see, is amazing and very funny.
Viendo estos cuadros no dejo de pensar en que habría que revisar el verdadero significado de la palabra “icono”. A base de ver la imagen de una gran personalidad repetida en fotos, murales, collages, calendarios y agendas, convertimos a ese “alguien” en un “algo”. Entonces ocurre: una persona se simboliza a sí misma.
Y este fenómeno nos entra en la cabeza al contemplar las obras de Coco Dávez. No tienen ojos, nariz ni boca. Y aun así, no tardas ni un minuto en reconocer a estos personajes.
Algo hace click cuando miras un cuadro donde en el lugar de un rostro solo hay un brochazo de pintura y reconoces al instante a una persona famosa. Felicidades Coco.
Looking at these pictures I keep thinking if the true meaning of the word "icon" should be revised. Based on seeing the image of a great personality repeated in photos, murals, collages, calendars and agendas, we turn that "someone" into a "something". Then it happens: a person symbolizes itself. And this phenomenon comes to my mind when I am contemplating the works of Coco Dávez. They do not have eyes, nose or mouth. And even then, you do not take a minute to recognize who they are. Something clicks when you look at a painting where in the place of a face there is only a brush of paint and instantly recognize a famous person. Congratulations Coco.
