Dos años de continuas obras han hecho falta para que el edificio España, que se inauguró en 1953, volviese a relucir con una nueva cara. Tras años de abandono, especulación inmobilaria y un futuro incierto, por fin Madrid ha recuperado uno de sus edificio más emblemáticos transformado ahora en Hotel.
Un lavado de imagen, pero no de espíritu porque el proyecto se ha esmerado en conservar la esencia del lugar. Por ello, el equipo de decoración del Hotel RIU se ha encargado de que en los espacios se respire una atmósfera que recuerda a los años 50.
Y ahora, vamos al grano. A lo que te va a tener pegado a la cámara de tu móvil mientras estés entre esas cuatro paredes. Entras en el ascensor, te diriges a la última planta (27 en total) y las puertas se abren al 360º Rooftop Bar, la terraza en la que querrás poner una tienda de campaña y quedarte a vivir toda la vida.
¿El dato? Está abierta al público, sin necesidad de hospedarse en el hotel.
El nombre no es casual, nada lo es en este lugar. La terraza da una vuelta entera alrededor del hotel para no perder detalle de Madrid. De repente, te topas con unas vistas que, con toda seguridad, te dejarán sin aliento, y es que desde allí arriba puede admirarse toda la ciudad. Si no te parece suficiente, siempre puedes ir al mirador, un poco más arriba.
Sí, aún puedes llegar más alto.
After two years of continuous work, the Spain building, which was inaugurated in 1953, shines again with a new face. Years of desolation, real estate speculation and an uncertain future have finally gone and Madrid has recovered one of its most emblematic buildings, now transformed into a Hotel.
A wash of image, but not of spirit because the project has taken care to preserve the essence of the place. For this reason, the decoration team of the RIU Hotel has ensured that the spaces breathe an atmosphere that reminds us of the 1950s.
And now, let's get down to business. What's going to keep you stuck to your mobile camera while you're between those four walls. You enter the elevator, go to the top floor (27 in total) and the doors open to the 360º Rooftop Bar, the terrace in which you will want to set up a tent and live all your life.
The data? It is open to the public, without the obligation to stay at the hotel.
The name is not casual, nothing is in this place. The terrace goes all the way around the hotel in order not to miss any detail of Madrid. Suddenly, you find views that will surely take your breath away, and from up there you can admire the whole city. If that's not enough, you can go a little higher.
Yes, you can go even higher.
Un juego de sillas y sillones, con pequeñas mesas, en tonos neutros, salpicados con el verde de las plantas, decoran lo que es el espacio más contemporáneo del hotel. Y cuando te dispones a rodearlo, encuentras la clave del éxito, el por qué de esos 360 grados. Ambas mitades están unidas por una pasarela de cristal que, ¡ojo!, no es apta para aquellos que tengan miedo a las alturas y que yo no pude pasar porque en estaba lloviendo y, por seguridad, la habían cerrado al público ( qué fastidio)
Las dos partes de la terraza se conectan mediante un suelo de cristal transparente que, al mirar abajo, produce vértigo hasta al más valiente. Nada menos que 117 metros de caída están bajo tus pies así que, una vez que hayas disfrutado del momento,siéntate a disfrutar de alguna bebida mientras te pierdes en la inmensidad de Madrid.
A set of chairs and armchairs, with small tables, in neutral tones, sprinkled with the green of the plants, decorate what is the most contemporary space of the hotel. And when you get ready to surround it, you find the key to success, the reason for those 360 degrees. Both of the halves are joined by a glass catwalk that, watch out, is not suitable for those who are afraid of heights and that I could not cross because it was raining and, for safety reasons, they had closed it to the public (what a hassle!).
The two parts of the terrace are connected by a transparent glass floor that, when looking down, produces vertigo even to the bravest. There is a 117 metre drop under your feet, so once you've enjoyed the moment, sit down and enjoy a drink while you get lost in the immensity of Madrid.
Las vistas, como veis, son las mejores de Madrid. Se ve, en primer término, la plaza de España, ahora en obras, el Palacio Real y la catedral de la Almudena y, más atrás, la Casa de Campo, con su lago y el pizpireto perfil de la montaña rusa del Parque de Atracciones. A un lado, en la Gran Vía, sobresalen las siluetas del palacio de la Prensa y del Edificio Telefónica; en el otro lado, la calle Princesa y, al fondo, el Arco de la Memoria (antes, de la Victoria) y el Faro de Moncloa.
Mientras, en la parte de atrás de este bar panorámico se puede tener una vista magnífica del Conde Duque y los edificios de Malasaña y, más allá, las formas de los rascacielos de Nuevos Ministerios (con la imponente torre Picasso) y, más lejos todavía, las Cuatro Torres, con sus reconocibles perfiles.
The views, as you can see, are the best in Madrid. In the first place, you can see Plaza de España, now under renovation, the Royal Palace and the Almudena Cathedral and, further back, Casa de Campo, with its lake and the rustic roller coaster profile of Parque de Atracciones. On one side, on Gran Vía, the silhouettes of Press Palace and the Telefónica Building stand out; on the other side, Princesa Street and, in the distance, the Arch of Memory (before Victoria) and the Lighthouse of Moncloa.
Meanwhile, in the back of this panoramic bar you can have a magnificent view of the Conde Duque and the buildings of Malasaña and, beyond, the shapes of the skyscrapers of Nuevos Ministerios (with the imposing Picasso tower) and, further still, the Cuatro Torres, with its recognisable profiles.
Cuando vuelves a la planta baja, a poner los pies en la tierra, puedes apreciar pequeños detalles que demuestran el respeto que se ha tenido al antiguo edificio. Un antiguo ascensor convertido en cabina, el mármol, los bajorrelieves… siguen estando presentes y formando parte de ese encanto que parece rodear a este hotel.

When you get back to the ground floor, to step on the ground, you can see small details that testify the respect that has been had for the old structure. An old elevator turned into a cabin, the marble, the bas-reliefs... are still present and form part of the charm that seems to surround this hotel.
