Cuando todos pensamos en un viaje a Menorca enseguida se nos vienen a la cabeza esas calas azul turquesa que parecen piscinas en un chalet de lujo o playas salvajes con poca gente donde reina la tranquilidad. Y es que, más allá de los meses más masificados de Julio y Agosto, la isla me ha descubierto estos días que Febrero puede ser uno de los mejores meses del año para viajar a este pequeño paraíso en mitad del mediterráneo.
Creedme, todo han sido ventajas: poca gente, paseos nostálgicos por las calas, atardeceres maravillosos sólo contigo como espectador y un clima fantástico ( aunque de meterse en el agua nada de nada, al fin y al cabo aún es invierno)
La mejor manera de descubrir todo esto es recorriendo Menorca en coche. Aunque puedes atravesar la isla de un lado a otro en poco más de 45 minutos, lo cierto es que Menorca es uno de esos postres que nunca quieres llegar a acabar, saboreándolo poco a poco, deteniendo el coche en cada recodo del camino que te sorprenda. Y serán muchos.
Puedes traer tu coche en ferry aunque también cuentas con un buen número de oficinas de alquiler de coches en Menorca. Yo me fui a Eurocarp, alquilé un Seat león y me fui a descubrir la isla.
When we all think of a trip to Menorca we immediately think of those turquoise blue coves that look like swimming pools in a luxury villa or wild beaches with few people where quietness is the rule. And the fact is that, apart from the most crowded months of July and August, the island has revealed to me these days that February can be one of the best months of the year to travel to this small paradise in the middle of the Mediterranean.
Believe me, everything has worked out for the best: few people, nostalgic walks along the coves, wonderful sunsets only with you as a spectator and a fantastic climate (although you better no swimming it is still winter after all)
The best way to discover all this is by driving around Menorca. Although you can cross the island from north to south in just over 45 minutes, the truth is that Menorca is one of those desserts that you never want to finish, savouring it little by little, stopping the car at every bend in the road that surprises you. And there will be many.
You can bring your car by ferry but there are also a number of car hire offices in Menorca. I went to Eurocarp, rented a Seat león and went to discover the island.
No perderse Mahón y Ciudadela
Comenzamos en Mahón, uno de los dos principales núcleos urbanos de Menorca (el otro es Ciutadella) y un lugar perfecto para comenzar esta ruta que recorre los tesoros de la isla. Es el segundo puerto natural más profundo del mundo.
El puerto de Mahón ya no posee la febril actividad que le caracterizó durante los tiempos de la ocupación británica, pero sus callejuelas incitan a ser descubiertas a paso tranquilo.
Prueba el riquísimo pescado y marisco en los restaurantes del puerto, conoce la larga historia de la isla en el Museo de Menorca y admira la fachada de la iglesia de Santa María.
Sin desmerecer a Mahón, es Ciudadela de Menorca (conocida como Ciutadella) el núcleo urbano más bello de la isla.
Situada en el extremo oeste de Menorca, Ciutadella es un lugar que emana historia y romanticismo en cada una de sus calles. En verano la pobláción de la ciudad se dobla pero ahora, durante los meses de invierno, permanece tranquila y acogedora.
Visita la imponente Catedral de Santa María y deambula por las angostas calles peatonales que mueren en íntimas plazas.

The port of Mahon no longer has the feverish activity that characterized it during the time of the British occupation, but its narrow streets invite you to discover them at a leisurely pace.
Try the delicious fish and seafood in the port's restaurants, learn about the island's long history in the Museum of Menorca and admire the façade of the church of Santa Maria.
Without neglecting Mahon, Ciudadela de Menorca (known as Ciutadella) is the most beautiful town in Menorca.
Located at the western end, Ciutadella is a place that emanates history and romanticism in each of its streets. In summer the population of the city doubles but now, during the winter months, it remains quiet and welcoming.
Visit the imposing Cathedral of Santa Maria and wander through the narrow pedestrian streets that die in intimate squares.
Binibeca, el pueblo más blanco de Menorca
A poco más de 8 km de Mahón llegarás al pueblo pesquero de Binibeca Vell.
Este pueblo es obra del arquitecto Antonio Sintes Mercadal, quien, a principios de los 70, construyó este conjunto de casas de dos plantas, de fachadas blancas y dispuestas como los antiguos barrios moriscos.
Pasea por sus estrechas calles empedradas hasta llegar al pequeño puerto. Un lugar donde disfrutar de la tranquilidad y el poder hipnótico de las olas.
Remontando la costa hacia el noroeste, llegarás a la cueva d’En Xoroi, la más icónica de Menorca. Apostada en la cara de un acantilado que se yergue como un gigante sobre las oscuras aguas del Mediterráneo, esta cueva es ideal para disfrutar de los mejores atardeceres de la isla.
A little further than 8 km from Mahon you will arrive at the fishing village of Binibeca Vell.
This village is the work of the architect Antonio Sintes Mercadal, who, in the early 1970s, built this complex of two-storey houses, with white facades and designed like the old Moorish quarters.
You can walk through its narrow cobbled streets until you reach the small port. A place to enjoy the tranquility and the hypnotic power of the waves.
Going up the coast towards the northwest, you will reach the cave of En Xoroi, the most iconic cave in Menorca. Set on the face of a cliff that stands like a giant over the dark waters of the Mediterranean, this cave is great for enjoying the best sunsets on the island.
El agua de las playas es turquesa
Las visitas culturales siempre están bien, pues te ayudan a conocer el pasado del lugar, llegando a comprender mejor el presente del mismo. Sin embargo, no hay una buena ruta en coche por Menorca que no incluya unas cuantas de sus espectaculares playas. Yo fui a ver la Macarella y Macarelleta.
Estas populares calas de la costa sur son, por sus características naturales, de las más apreciadas por los visitantes de la isla. La playa de Macarella se abre al final de un barranco y está rodeada por frondosos pinares. Macarelleta es su cala vecina, más pequeña pero de igual belleza.
Sus trasparentes aguas de color turquesa no se borrarán de vuestra retina con facilidad . En sus alrededores tenéis la oportunidad de admirar sus acantilados donde os encontrareis con la agradable sorpresa de presenciar cuevas prehistóricas. Sin duda se trata de un auténtico paraíso para los amantes del naturismo.
Podréis llegar hasta estas idílicas calas desde el camino rural que lleva a Sant Joan de Missa desde Ciutadella.
Cultural tours are always welcome, as they help you to get to know the past of the place, and to better understand its present. However, there is no good route by car around Menorca without including a few of its spectacular beaches. I went to see Macarella and Macarelleta.
These popular coves on the south coast are, due to their natural characteristics, among the most valued by visitors to the island. Macarella beach opens up at the end of a ravine and is surrounded by lush pine forests. Macarelleta is its neighbouring cove, smaller but equally beautiful.
Its transparent turquoise waters will not fade from your retina easily. In its surroundings you have the opportunity to admire its cliffs where you will find the pleasant surprise of witnessing prehistoric caves. It is undoubtedly a real paradise for naturism lovers.
You can reach these idyllic coves from the rural road that leads to Sant Joan de Missa from Ciutadella.
En fin, prometo volver a Menorca con más tiempo. 48 horas se me hacen escasas para esta pequeña, tranquila y sofisticadamente sencilla isla en mitad del mediterráneo.
En el avión de vuelta a Madrid pensaba en ese último atardecer en la Macarella y me entraba la nostalgia. Me sentía un privilegiado. Y es que disfrutar de unos días de descanso durante el invierno es, hoy en día, uno de esos lujos que debemos permitirnos para poder gozar de una manera más sosegada, relajada y diferente de nuestro tiempo libre. Y como no, Menorca, es uno de los destinos más recomendables para ello
Anyway, I promise to come back to Menorca with more time. 48 hours are too little for me for this small, quiet and sophisticatedly simple island in the middle of the Mediterranean.
On the plane back to Madrid I was thinking about that last sunset in the Macarella and I was feeling nostalgic. I felt privileged. Enjoying a few days of leisure during the winter is, nowadays, one of those luxuries that we should allow ourselves in order to enjoy our free time in a more peaceful, relaxed and different way. And of course, Menorca is one of the most recommended destinations for this purpose.
