Antes de venir a Camboya leí en una guía turística que Angkor es en Asia lo que Versalles es en Europa. En ese momento pensé en lo exagerado de la comparación pero una vez allí me di cuenta en que se habían quedado cortos. Es mucho más.
Ankorg es fascinante, único y, sobre todo, un lugar mágico en la tierra. Todos sus templos con sus sonrisas petrificadas te conquistan desde el primer momento en que los pisas. Lo componen más de 1000 templos, palacios y tumbas, en medio de la jungla camboyana; un lugar extraordinario y misterioso, con energía propia.
Santuarios plagados de rostros enigmáticos que nos examinan vigilantes con sonrisas eternas. El conjunto es de tal belleza que en 1992 fue declarado Patrimonio de la Humanida por la UNESCO.
Andar por los corredores de los templos de Angkor es hacer un viaje a tiempos pasados de leyenda, voluptuosas ninfas, desafiantes guerreros y fantásticos seres mitológicos.
Sin duda, Angkor daría para toda una vida descubriendo lugares mágicos, muchos de ellos prácticamente ocultos en la espesura de la jungla. Los imprescindibles, eso sí, son los más cercanos: Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom, Bayón o Banteay Srei. Pero hay muchos más, como el lejano y misterioso Beng Mealea, a casi 70 kilómetros de los templos principales, o como Ta Prohm, que fascinaría al mismísimo Indiana Jones, entre otros muchos.
Yo tuve la suerte de estar allí durante dos días y de sentir en carne propia todo el peso de la religión y de la historia que albergan estos maravillosos templos.

Before arriving in Cambodia I read in a tourist guide that Angkor is to Asia what Versailles is to Europe. At that moment I thought about the exaggerated comparison but once there I realized that they had been short. It's much more.
Ankorg is fascinating, unique and, above all, a magical place on earth. All its temples with their petrified smiles conquer you from the first moment you step on them. It is made up by more than 1000 temples, palaces and tombs, in the middle of the Cambodian jungle; an extraordinary and mysterious place, with its own energy.
Sanctuaries full of enigmatic faces that examine us vigilant with eternal smiles. The place is so gorgeous that it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992.
Walking along the corridors of the temples of Angkor is to make a trip to past times of legend, voluptuous nymphs, defiant warriors and fantastic mythological beings.
Without a doubt, Angkor would provide a lifetime of discovering magical places, many of them practically hidden in the dense jungle. The essential ones, of course, are the closest: Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom, Bayón or Banteay Srei. But there are many more, such as the distant and mysterious Beng Mealea, almost 70 kilometers from the main temples, or Ta Prohm, which would fascinate Indiana Jones himself, among many others.
I was fortunate enough to be there for two days and to feel the full weight of religion and history housed in those wonderful temples.

Para visitar los templos de Angkor tienes que ir a la cercana ciudad de Siem Riap, a tan sólo 5 kilómetros de distancia; una ciudad inventada y frenética, que se renueva constantemente con nuevos hostales y hoteles, restaurantes de todas las categorías y puestos de comida callejera que conviven con lujosos spas, circuitos para gourmets y una escena cultural muy creativa. En realidad es una de las más visitadas del mundo ya que desde allí parten todas las excursiones a Angkor.
Y una vez allí lo primero que vas a ver es el templo de Angkor Wat, la octava maravilla del mundo.
Alma y símbolo de Camboya, núcleo de la civilización jemer y una fuente de orgullo nacional, hacen falta al menos dos horas para visitar el templo de Angkor Wat, o incluso medio día si nos proponemos descifrar el significado de los bajorrelieves acompañados de un guía. La sensación que uno tiene al ver por primera vez Angkor Wat, la máxima expresión del ingenio jemer, solo es comparable a la que producen lugares muy escogidos en el mundo. Construido por Suryavarman II (1112-1150) es uno de los monumentos más brillantes concebidos por la mente humana. Tiene 800 metros de bajorrelieves y una torre de 55 metros, que otorga al conjunto una unidad sublime. Angkor es famoso por sus seductoras apsaras (ninfas divinas). Hay casi 2000 talladas en las paredes, cada una con un motivo único y con 37 estilos diferentes de peinado. La mezcla de espiritualidad y simetría es asombrosa.
Angkor Wat, in its beauty and state of preservation, is unrivaled. Its mightiness and magnificence bespeak a pomp and a luxury surpassing that of a Pharaoh or a Shah Jahan, an impressiveness greater than that of the Pyramids, an artistic distinctiveness as fine as that of the Taj Mahal. Angkor Wat is located about six kilometers (four miles) north of Siem Reap, south of Angkor Thom. Entry and exit to Angkor Wat can only be access from its west gate.
Angkor Wat was built in the first half of the 12th century (113-5BC). Estimated construction time of the temple is 30 years by King Suryavarman II, dedicated to Vishnu (Hindu), replica of Angkor Thom style of art.
Angkor Wat, the largest monument of the Angkor group and the best preserved, is an architectural masterpiece. Its perfection in composition, balance, proportions, relief's and sculpture make it one of the finest monuments in the world.
Wat is the Khmer name for temple (the French spelling is "vat "), which was probably added to "Angkor "when it became a Theravada Buddhist monument, most likely in the sixteenth century. After 1432 when the capital moved to Phnom Penh, Angkor Wat was cared for by Buddhist monks.
It is generally accepted that Angkor Wat was a funerary temple for King Suryavarman II and oriented to the west to conform to the symbolism between the setting sun and death. The bas-reliefs, designed for viewing from left to right in the order of Hindu funereal ritual, support this function.
Todos los templos de Angkor impresionan, pero este mucho más. Parece sacado de una película. Fue escenario original del rodaje de Tomb Raider, oculto siembre entre un juego de luces y sombras. Lo caracterizan sus torres derruidas y muros atrapados entre los brazos de un enorme sistema de raíces. Sin duda se trata de las ruinas con más personalidad de Angkor: no hay que perdérselas. Su encanto reside en que, a diferencia de otros monumentos de la zona, ha sido engullido por la selva y se parece mucho a lo que los primeros exploradores europeos debieron encontrar cuando se toparon con Angkor. Esa es la teoría, aunque en realidad la selva se mantiene a raya y solo se conservan los árboles más grandes. Aun así, en Ta Prohm uno se siente en otro mundo, y nos recuerda el poder de la frondosidad selvática.
La visita impresiona más durante las primeras horas del día y conviene dedicar al menos dos horas para explorar convenientemente, entre sus laberínticos pasillos y enormes raíces.
When Lara Croft and Tomb Raider pushed Hollywood images of Ta Prohm temple into cinemas around the world in 2001, they consolidated the case for Cambodia as a tourist destination. Little over fifteen years later, millions of visitors flock to Siem Reap each year, many of whom will have their picture taken under “that tree” that Angelina Jolie stood upon during one of the movie’s action scenes.
There is, however, obviously much more to Ta Prohm than its famous friends. It is perhaps included in “the big three” along with Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom as one of the must-see temples because of the movie-attraction, but in reality Ta Prohm is a mesmerizing temple to visit quite apart from its Hollywood status. In fact, it is probably the decision not to clear the site of trees, and leave some of the most impressive jungle/ruin take-overs in place, that caught the attention of film location scouts and made it one of the most atmospheric and most photographed of all the temples.
