Aprovechando que estoy estos días en Copenhague para la Semana de la Moda, me he escapado al centro de la ciudad para visitar (y disfrutar) de la tienda de HAY, la firma de diseño danés de la que todos hablan y pocos conocen porque es dificilísimo encontrar.
El edificio es impresionante. Una maravillosa construcción de finales del siglo XVIII de 4 plantas, 2 de ellas dedicadas a tienda y otras 2 a oficinas y showrooms. Si te gusta el minimalismo nórdico, este es tu paraíso.
Los precios aquí son más elevados que en otras tiendas de diseño nórdico pero lo que vas a encontrar son piezas atemporales, creadas por diseñadores y arquitectos en exclusiva para HAY.
Si algo les caracteriza es su afán por la innovación, los diseños atrevidos y la alta calidad de su fabricación industrial. Se inspiran en los días de gloria del diseño escandinavo de mediados del siglo XX y se sitúan en algún lugar entre la arquitectura y la moda, explorando y respondiendo a las necesidades de la vida contemporánea.
Vamos a ver la tienda.
As I'm in Copenhagen for Fashion Week over the last few days, I've managed to visit (and enjoy) HAY's shop, the Danish design firm that everyone talks about but few know because it's so hard to find.
The building is impressive. A marvellous construction from the end of the 18th century with 4 floors, 2 of them for shops and the other 2 for offices and showrooms. If you like Nordic minimalism, this is your paradise.
The prices here are higher than in other Nordic design shops, but what you will find here are timeless pieces, created by designers and architects exclusively for HAY.
If there's one thing that distinguishes HAY, it's the desire for innovation, daring designs and high quality industrial manufacturing. They are inspired by the glory days of mid-20th century Scandinavian design and sit somewhere between architecture and fashion, exploring and responding to the needs of contemporary living.
Let's take a look at the shop
HAY es, como estais viendo, puro estilo danés funcional; es decir siempre pensado por y para personas, no para impresionar. Por ejemplo, una silla que pesa mucho, o es incómoda, no será nunca una buena silla. Y así, con esa filosofía, es fácil entender y sumergirse en la mentalidad danesa de diseñar sus casas. Son piezas que se integran fácilmente en cualquier lugar y están diseñadas y fabricadas para durar. No siguen tendencias ni modas a corto plazo y está al servicio del ser humano y su bienestar.
Entrar en HAY es como auto invitarse a una casa danesa donde todo está pensado para el disfrute, la comodidad y el ser tú mismo. Se trata de un sentimiento nativo. Los escandinavos, y especialmente los daneses, disfrutan de la vida familiar y con amigos en casa, tanto alrededor de la mesa como en salas de estar. Un buen diseño con materiales naturales, acompañado de una estética simple y artesanal a un precio razonable, es parte de estos valores.
HAY is, as you can see, pure functional Danish style, i.e. always designed by and for people, not to impress. For example, a chair that is heavy or uncomfortable will never be a good chair. And so, with this philosophy, it is easy to understand and immerse yourself in the Danish mentality of designing Danish homes. They are pieces that integrate easily in any place and are designed and manufactured to last. They do not follow trends or short-term fashions and are at the service of human beings and their wellbeing.
Entering HAY is like inviting yourself to a Danish home where everything is designed for enjoyment, comfort and being yourself. It is a native feeling. Scandinavians, and especially the Danes, enjoy living with family and friends at home, both around the table and in living rooms. Good design with natural materials, accompanied by simple aesthetics and craftsmanship at a reasonable price, is part of these values.
La casa HAY es reflejo de la mentalidad danes y nórdica, en general: no se concibe como un lugar con objetos de lujo para una minoría, porque son una sociedad bastante igualitaria que busca el beneficio común y mejorar la vida de todos. Las casas danesas tienen pocas piezas pero buenas, y eso es algo muy característico de ellos. Por su clima son más caseros, por ello buscan un ambiente que no sea cargado, rodeado muebles que reflejen la luz (tan escasa algunos meses del año), pocos estampados y colores que inviten a relajarse. No tienen casas para recibir, sino para vivir en ellas.
Así es HAY.
A HAY house is a reflection of Danish and Nordic mentality, as a whole: it is not a place with luxury objects for a minority, because they are a fairly egalitarian society that seeks the common benefit and improve the lives of all. Danish houses have few but good parts, and that is something very characteristic of them. Because of the climate, they are more homely, so they look for an atmosphere that is not stuffy, surrounded by furniture that reflects the light (so scarce some months of the year), few prints and colours that invite you to relax. They do not have houses to receive, but to live in.
That is how HAY is.
