Etosha es sencillamente uno de los mejores lugares del mundo para ver animales salvajes. Pocos lugares en el sur de África pueden competir con la fauna y la flora de este extraordinario Parque Nacional. Una red de acuíferos dispersados entre los bosques y pastos que rodean el desierto salino, cegadoramente blanco, que se pierde en el horizonte, atrae a multitud de animales. Un solo acuífero puede dar lugar a miles de avistamientos en un día, con los leones y los rinocerontes como estrellas.
El Parque Nacional de Etosha puede ser visitado «por libre», conduciendo nuestro propio coche de alquiler por las diferentes pistas que atraviesan el parque. Aunque quizá pueda parecer demasiado intrépido o incluso peligroso, lo cierto es que con unas sencillas medidas de seguridad (y sentido común) realizar un safari por libre en Etosha es una de esas aventuras inolvidables que vivirás en Namibia.
¿Vamos a verlo?
Etosha is simply one of the best places in the world to see wildlife. Few places in southern Africa can compete with the fauna and flora of this extraordinary National Park. A network of aquifers scattered among the forests and grasslands surrounding the blindingly white saline desert, which disappears into the horizon, attracts a multitude of animals. A single aquifer can yield thousands of sightings in a day, with lions and rhinos the stars.
Etosha National Park can be visited "on your own", driving our own rental car along the various tracks that crisscross the park. Although it may seem too intrepid or even dangerous, the truth is that with a few simple safety measures (and common sense) a self-drive safari in Etosha is one of the most unforgettable adventures.
Shall we go and see it?
Etosha es una de las reservas de animales más grandes de África en extensión (22.000 km cuadrados) y también una las más singulares ya que el paisaje es muy árido, casi sin arbolado. Un ambiente desértico que se magnifica en el pan, una antigua zona lacustre -hoy seca y con una gran costra de sal- por la que solo se aventuran los avestruces. Etosha solo tiene tres entradas:Namutoni, al este; Okaukuejo, al sur; y King Nehale (la menos utilizada), al oeste. Y solo tres zonas de acampada, dos en las puertas este y sur y otra –la de Halali- en el centro del parque, que es la más popular y recomendable. Está prohibido pernoctar en ningún otro lugar fuera de esas tres zonas. ¿La mejor época para visitarlo?: de mayo a octubre, la temporada seca y más fresca.
Pese a su apariencia desértica, está lleno de vida y es fácil ver grandes manadas de herbívoros, todo tipo de antílopes, jirafas, elefantes, rinocerontes y grandes felinos. Otra de sus ventajas es que puedes recorrerlo libremente en tu coche de alquiler. Pide un mapa en la puerta por la que accedas y apóstate en las diversas charcas que hay: es la mejor estrategia para ver animales si no tienes experiencia en observación.
Tanto en la zonas de acampada de Halali como en las Namutoni y Okaukuejo existen unas charcas artificiales iluminadas por la noche (y valladas) en las que sentarse a dejar pasar la horas y ver docenas de animales (incluidos elefantes, rinocerontes e incluso leones) que llegan a beber con la nocturnidad.
Etosha is one of the largest wildlife reserves in Africa in extension (22,000 square kilometers) and also one of the most unique because the landscape is very dry, with almost no trees. A desert environment that is magnified in the pan, an ancient lake area - today dry and with a large salt crust - through which only ostriches venture. Etosha has only three entrances: Namutoni, to the east; Okaukuejo, to the south; and King Nehale (the least used), to the west. And only three camping areas, two at the east and south gates and another - the Halali - in the center of the park, which is the most popular and recommended. The best time to visit is from May to October, the coolest and driest season.
Despite its desert-like appearance, it is full of life and it is easy to see large herds of herbivores, all kinds of antelopes, giraffes, elephants, rhinos and wild felines. Another of its advantages is that you can tour it freely in your rental car. Ask for a map at the gate where you enter the park, and park yourself in the various waterholes: this is the best strategy to see animals if you have no experience in game viewing.
In the Halali, Namutoni and Okaukuejo campgrounds, there are artificial waterholes that are lit up at night (and fenced off) where you can sit and let the hours pass and watch dozens of animals (including elephants, rhinos and even lions) come to drink in the night.
Consejos prácticos para visitar el parque
Está prohibido bajarse del vehículo por razones obvias de seguridad (te puede comer un león, por ejemplo).
Igualmente, tampoco se permite circular por el parque durante la noche, por lo que es obligatorio regresar al campamento antes de que se ponga el sol. Las horas de entrada y salida del parque se rigen igualmente por el anochecer y el amanecer, por lo que son variables.
Llevar repelente de mosquitos y ropa de manga larga, preferiblemente de colores claros.
Tomar precauciones contra el sol: usar gafas de sol, sombrero y protector solar.
Llevar agua y comida suficiente para los días que se permanezca en el parque, ya que los campamentos ofrecen pocas opciones y por lo general bastante caras.
Llevar unos prismáticos para observar a los animales en la distancia.
Aunque a menudo se dice que Namibia es “África para principiantes” por las facilidades y las comodidades que ofrece, es muy importante tener en cuenta las recomendaciones del Ministerio de Asuntos Exteriores en cuanto a salud y seguridad.

Tips for visiting the park
It is forbidden to get out of the vehicle for obvious safety reasons (you may be eaten by a lion, for example).
It is also forbidden to drive through the park at night, so it is mandatory to return to the camp before sunset. Park entrance and exit times are also governed by dusk and dawn, so they are variable.
Bring mosquito repellent and long-sleeved clothing, preferably light-colored.
Take precautions against the sun: wear sunglasses, a hat and sunscreen.
Bring enough water and food for the days you stay in the park, as the campsites offer few options and are usually quite expensive.
Bring binoculars to observe the animals in the distance.
Although it is often said that Namibia is "Africa for beginners" because of the facilities and comforts it offers, it is very important to take into account the recommendations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding health and safety.

Dónde hospedarse
En los alrededores del Parque Nacional encontraréis muchas ofertas de hospedaje. Los hay de muchos tipos pero yo os aconsejo que tras una jornada entera (o dos) en Etosha os vayáis a descansar a un buen lodge con todo tipo de comodidades. Yo me quedé en Epacha Game Lodge & Spa, un hotel que, de la noche a la mañana, me llevó de vuelta a África en la época victoriana.

Featuring an outdoor swimming pool, Epacha Game Lodge & Spa is nestled within a 13000-hectare private reserve and is 39 km from the Etosha National Park and 97 km from Outjo.
The air-conditioned, elegant rooms feature a ceiling with exposed wooden beams and have a mosquito net draped over the bed. They offer a balcony with a view and come fitted with a minibar, tea-and-coffee-making facilities and an en suite bathroom with a bath and shower.

En fin ¿a qué es maravilloso?
