Quién diga que Holanda es sólo Amsterdam es que no conoce Rotterdam. Es el típico ejemplo de ciudad industrial de los años 60 y 70 reinventada a sí misma y transformada hoy en día en una metrópoli moderna. Sus enormes edificios de vanguardia y su gran vida cultura y social delatan a la ciudad en la que se ha convertido.
Muchos vienen a esta ciudad pensando en que se van a encontrar una segunda Amsterdam y salen decepcionados. Yo creo que toda ciudad tiene su belleza y Rotterdam es el punto de referencia para la Holanda moderna. La ciudad fue totalmente destruida en la II Guerra Mundial y su reconstrucción no pudo ser más impresionante; los gobernantes apostaron en su día ( y también ahora) en volver a hacer de su puerto el más grande de Europa y a la ciudad la dotaron de edificios con siluetas arriesgadas, desafiantes al duro clima y, sobre todo, de referencia mundial.
As a tourist destination, Rotterdam often flies under the radar of international tourists. As the the second-most populous city in the Netherlands, it invites unwarranted comparisons to Amsterdam, but tourists who expect to find just another Amsterdam will be disappointed - the history and people of Rotterdam have endowed it with a character that is uniquely its own.
One of the first observations that visitors make is that Rotterdam scarcely looks like a typical Dutch city, and it's not: the city center was razed by aerial attacks in World War II, and the present cityscape, with few exceptions, dates from the post-war era, when Rotterdam established the unique architectural sensibility that's become its trademark.
Rotterdam is also the pinnacle of Dutch multiculturalism: half of its residents have at least one parent who was born outside the Netherlands. This translates to a cosmopolitan city where the imprint of diverse ethnicities - from the substantial Antillean and Cape Verdean communities to Rotterdam's own Chinatown - can be seen.
Salvo contadas edificaciones, tras el bombardeo y el posterior incendio se optó por la demolición total del centro, en lugar de tratar reconstruirlo. A partir de un lienzo prácticamente en blanco, la ciudad buscó corregir su viejo trazado urbano. La estética de Róterdam, debido al bombardeo nazi, es sustancialmente diferente a la de otras ciudades de los Países Bajos.
Otra de las singularidades de la ciudad es su relación con el agua. Los 206 kilómetros cuadrados de tierra de Rótterdam están rodeados por otros 114 de agua. Buena parte de la urbe se encuentra por debajo del nivel del mar, protegida por enormes diques. Asimismo, el río Nieuwe Maas atraviesa la ciudad de sur a norte y desemboca en el Mar del Norte.
There is a reason for that, the place got completely bombed in World War II and instead of rebuilding it in traditional Dutch style, it became a place booming with modern architecture and funky buildings.
You’ll enjoy Rotterdam a LOT more if you know where to go out and some interesting things to do off the bat. Amsterdam can be great to simply wander and breathe in the sights without any real purpose, whereas in Rotterdam you’ll need a few tips on where to go.
Rotterdam plays host to Europe’s largest port, so of course there are a number of boat tours you can do if checking out the port sounds like fun.
Uno de los referentes turísticos de Róterdam son las casas cubo o casas cúbicas, diseñadas en la década de los 80 por Piet Blom. Además de sus colores –amarillo y blanco–, este "bosque de viviendas" llama poderosamente la atención por su inclinación de 45 grados. La mayoría de ellas son viviendas en uso, aunque es posible visitar una por dentro para comprobar cómo se vive en una casa inclinada. Al lado de las casas cubo se alza otro emblemático edificio de viviendas con forma de lápiz y caminando unos cuantos pasos llegamos hasta la Casa Blanca de Róterdam (1897), de estilo art nouveau, que fue el primer rascacielos de Europa. En él se instaló uno de los primeros ascensores de la ciudad.
If you’re into architecture there are myriads of buildings to investigate, from the Cube Houses near Station Blaak to the quirky buildings located near Central Station.
The Euromast “Space Tower” is also a big attraction, there is a restaurant on top and it’s worth seeing just for the view. You can even go abseiling off the side but this is not something that’s available all the year round.
My hot tip is to have a picnic in the Euromast Park nearby, on a sunny day it’s a beautiful park full of shady trees, vibrant green grass and lazy Dutch streams.
For museum lovers there is the Boijmans museum. It’s actually considered to be one of the best museums in Western Europe, and it’s located in “Museumplein” which, as you can imagine, has lots of museums nearby such as the Natural History Museum and the Kunsthall.
Rotterdam está conectada por varios túneles –como el el Beneluxtunnel o el Maastunnel–, además de por puentes tan emblemáticos como el Erasmusbrug (1996), en cuyo vano sur se encuentra el puente vasculante más grande de Europa occidental. Pero el mayor exponente de la vinculación de Rotterdam con el agua es su imponente puerto, el Europoort. Es el puerto más importante del viejo continente y se encuentra entre los primeros del mundo. Con sus 40 kilómetros de longitud y un cruce de canales estratégico, es posible llegar a otras ciudades europeas desde el puerto de Róterdam.
Rotterdam's massive port occupies half the city's total area of 247 square kilometers, much of it in turn occupied by Europoort, a huge complex known as the Gateway to Europe. It's a fascinating area to visit as part of a boat tour, and numerous tourist options are available sailing from various locations around Rotterdam, often in conjunction with tours of other parts of the city. In addition to countless massive ships, you'll see mile after mile of quays and storage facilities built to service the world's busiest port. One of the most popular excursions begins at Maeslantkering near Hoek van Holland (Hook of Holland) and includes a close-up look at the city's massive surge barrier. Evening tours are also fun, especially with Rotterdam's most famous landmarks, including the superb Erasmus Bridge, being spectacularly illuminated.
Esta ciudad es ideal para caminar. Como toda Holanda es llana y eso facilita mucho los paseos de un lado a otro, aunque eso sí os recomiendo una buena bufanda y no olvidar el paraguas en el hotel.
Aquí se fundó la primera calle peatonal del mundo, estuvo el primer rascacielos de oficinas de Europa, salían transatlánticos llenos de inmigrantes europeos al nuevo continente etc, en definitiva una ciudad con mucha historia y personalidad propia.
I love Rotterdam because it’s such an underrated city and often people don’t give it a chance, both people from The Netherlands and tourists alike – and I’m happy I did and I’ve discovered what an awesome place it is.
Rotterdam really is an excellent city once you get to know it.
It’s always building and has a rich history and a can-do attitude teeming with art and culture, watch this city over the next 20 years – I predict a boom!
