Pocas exposiciones te llegan tanto como la de Yayoi Kusama en el Museo Guggenheim de Bilbao. No sé, puede que sean las formas de sus esculturas, los colores de sus pinturas, sus objetos tridimensionales misteriosos o esos hipnóticos lunares tan presentes en toda su obra, los que me han hecho sentirla de cerca. Como si hubiera conocido su trabajo de toda la vida, algo que, lamentablemente no ha sido así.
La primera noticia que tuve de Kusama fue a través de una performance que hizo en Paris para la marca de moda francesa Louis Vuitton. El conjunto era impresionante: una escultura gigantesca, enorme, de la japonesa estaba ahí parada frente a la tienda decorando el exterior con setas y lunares. Vi todo aquello, me quedé maravillado y empecé a querer saber más y más sobre ella. Ha sido un descubrimiento llegar hasta aquí, hasta Bilbao, para ver la que es y, seguramente, será la mejor retrospectiva de toda su vida.
Yayoi Kusama: desde 1945 hasta hoy, una muestra compuesta por 200 obras —pinturas, dibujos, esculturas, instalaciones y material de archivo que documentan sus happenings y performances— de la artista japonesa que inundan el Museo Guggenheim de Bilbao.
I can guarantee you that a few exhibitions will move you as much as Yayoi Kusama's exhibition at the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao. It could be the shapes of her sculptures, or the colors of those paintings, or her mysterious three-dimensional objects, or those hypnotic polka dots so present in all her work, that made me feel her close to me. As if we had known each other forever, something that, unfortunately, has not been the case. The first time I heard about Kusama was through a performance she did in Paris for the French fashion brand Louis Vuitton. The set was impressive: a gigantic, huge sculpture of the Japanese woman was standing there in front of the store decorating the outside with her mushrooms and polka dots. When I saw all that, I was amazed and started to learn more and more about her. It has been a revelation to come here, to Bilbao, to see what is and, surely, will be the best retrospective of her life.
Yayoi Kusama: from 1945 to today, an exhibition of 200 works -paintings, drawings, sculptures, installations and archival material documenting her happenings and performances- of the Japanese artist that flood the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao.
La exposición de Yayoi Kusama en el Guggenheim de Bilbao abarca desde los primeros dibujos que realizó siendo una adolescente durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial hasta sus obras inmersivas más recientes. “Es la retrospectiva definitiva de Kusama, en la que el público podrá ver obras que hasta ahora no se han compartido”, asegura Suhanya Raffel, directora del Museo M+, de Hong Kong, pinacoteca que también acogió esta exposición y que ha trabajado conjuntamente con el Guggenheim para traerla a Bilbao.
La historia de su vida es, a la vez, su obra como artista. Kusama lleva desde los años 70 internada en un hospital psiquiátrico de forma voluntaria. Dicen que Kusama estaba agotada, tenía una depresión profunda después de la muerte de su padre y de su amigo, el también artista Joseph Cornell. Ahí se da cuenta de que la idea del suicidio era una constante y que aunque el suicidio y las alucinaciones siempre fueron algo constante en su vida, en ese momento decide autointernarse para protegerse a sí misma. Encuentra ahí el lugar que le da esa tranquilidad para poder seguir trabajando. Crea un arte curativo y ese es el espacio y el entorno que le permiten trabajar, lo cual es tremendamente inteligente. Sabe que tiene un problema, pero busca y encuentra la solución.
The exhibition includes everything from the first drawings she made as a teenager during World War II to her most recent immersive works. "It is Kusama's definitive retrospective, in which the public will be able to see works that until now have not been shared," says Suhanya Raffel, director of the M+ Museum in Hong Kong, the art gallery that also hosted this exhibition and has worked with the Guggenheim to bring it to Bilbao.
Kusama was exhausted, she had a deep depression after the death of her father and her friend, the artist Joseph Cornell. There she realizes that the idea of suicide was a constant and that although suicide and hallucinations were always something constant in her life, at that moment she decides to self-intern herself to protect herself. She finds there the place that gives her peace of mind to be able to continue working. She creates a healing art and that is the space and environment that allows her to work, which is tremendously intelligent. She knows she has a problem, but she seeks and finds the solution.
Esta mujer menuda, feminista, revolucionaria y vanguardista comenzó muy pronto a crear como vía de escape a las alucinaciones que sufría ya desde pequeña. Los delirios en forma de patrones y puntos que se extendían por las paredes, los techos e incluso por su cuerpo, han configurado su universo creativo.
Su biografía es tan apasionante como su obra. Kusama se mudó a Estados Unidos en 1957, por recomendación de su amiga por correspondencia, Georgia O’Keeffe. Allí conoció a Donald Judd, Andy Warhol, Claes Oldenburg y Joseph Cornell, lo que marcó un hito en su carrera artística. Mientras en Manhattan triunfaba el pop y Warhol reinaba en su Factory y en Studio 54, esta mujer menuda revolucionó la Gran Manzana con sus performances y happenings (en Walking Piece paseó con kimono por Nueva York, mientras en otras acciones pintaba lunares sobre gente desnuda mostrando su rechazo a la guerra de Vietnam), además de manifestarse contra el expresionismo abstracto, que consideraba patriarcal. Trabajó sin descanso (fue hospitalizada varias veces por agotamiento) pintando su arte acumulativo en objetos cotidianos y realizando performances contra la guerra de Vietnam y a favor de la liberación sexual y los derechos de los homosexuales, incluso celebró una boda homosexual.
This tiny, feminist, revolutionary and avant-garde woman began very early to create as an escape from the hallucinations she suffered since she was a child. The delusions in the form of patterns and dots that spread across walls, ceilings and even her body, have shaped her creative universe.
Her biography is as exciting as her work. Kusama moved to the United States in 1957, on the recommendation of her pen pal, Georgia O'Keeffe. There she met Donald Judd, Andy Warhol, Claes Oldenburg and Joseph Cornell, which marked a milestone in her artistic career. While pop triumphed in Manhattan and Warhol reigned in his Factory and Studio 54, this petite woman revolutionized the Big Apple with her performances and happenings (in Walking Piece she walked around New York wearing a kimono, while in other actions she painted polka dots on naked people showing her rejection of the Vietnam War), as well as demonstrating against abstract expressionism, which she considered patriarchal. She worked tirelessly (she was hospitalized several times due to exhaustion) painting her cumulative art on everyday objects and performing against the Vietnam War and in favor of sexual liberation and gay rights, even celebrating a gay wedding.
A sus 94 años no ha renunciado a trabajar y sigue haciéndolo con obsesión infinita en un estudio más pequeño. En 2021 y 2022 creó 15 obras nuevas para esta exposición.
Desde el hospital psiquiátrico en Japón donde reside, la artista quiso participar en la presentación de su exposición con unas palabras: “En este mundo caótico, usaría todo el poder del arte para expresar totalmente el deseo de paz y la magnificencia de la humanidad. Corazones ardiendo con amor rojo fuego, eterno e inagotable. Oremos juntos por el amor”.
At the age of 94, he has not given up working and continues to do so with infinite obsession in a smaller studio. In 2021 and 2022 she created 15 new works for this exhibition.
From the psychiatric hospital in Japan where she resides, the artist wanted to participate in the presentation of her exhibition with a few words: "In this chaotic world, I would use all the power of art to fully express the desire for peace and the magnificence of humanity. Hearts burning with fire-red love, eternal and inexhaustible. Let us pray together for love"
