Cuando hablamos de horror y de guerra, quizás una de las primeras imágenes que hay en el imaginario colectivo es el cuadro de los "Fusilamientos del 3 de Mayo" de Francisco de Goya. En él se refleja la matanza del ejército de Napoleón en represalia al levantamiento contra la ocupación francesa del 2 de mayo de 1808 protagonizado por el pueblo madrileño.
Recuerdo que la primera vez que lo vi en el Museo del Prado me pareció tan real que me asustó; me sentí como un testigo mudo de algo que había pasado hace más de 2 siglos.
Pues bien, esa misma sensación volvió a mi mente el otro día al ver este fantástico mural de 300 metros que decora una pared de hormigón con el lienzo de Los Fusilamientos en las inmediaciones de la ermita de San Antonio de la Florida de Madrid, donde están los restos mortales del pintor universal.
El mural es sobrecogedoramente impresionante. Es obra del artista Javier lobo (Madrid, 39 años) y ahí esta, para disfrute de todos.
When we talk about horror and war, perhaps one of the first images in the collective imagination is the painting of the "Fusilamientos del 3 de Mayo" by Francisco de Goya. It reflects the slaughter of Napoleon's army in retaliation to the uprising against the French occupation of May 2, 1808, carried out by the people of Madrid.
I remember my first time seeing it at the Prado Museum it seemed so real that it frightened me; I felt like a mute witness of something that had happened more than 2 centuries ago.
Well, that same feeling came back to my mind the other day when I saw this fantastic 300-meter mural that decorates a concrete wall with the canvas of The Fusiliations in the vicinity of the hermitage of San Antonio de la Florida in Madrid, where the mortal remains of the universal painter are kept.
The mural is overwhelmingly impressive. It is the work of the artist Javier Lobo (Madrid, 39 years old) and there it is, for everyone's pleasure.
Según Lobo, este ha sido el trabajo "más complicado" que ha hecho, "pero no por su dificultad técnica", sino por la premura de tiempo para acabar la obra.
Es un encargo municipal y hubo que pedir permiso a Patrimonio para hacer el mural y cuando dio luz verde contaba "solo con tres semanas para tenerlo acabado y en ese periodo llovió 10 días", por lo que el artista ha tenido que aprovechar días festivos como el de Navidad para cumplir el encargo.
El mural no ha dejado indiferente al vecindario ni a nadie que pase por ahí. Situado en la calle Mozart junto al Paseo de la Florida, el diseño juega con los colores y la iluminación, aprovechando los distintos planos del muro para conseguir la profundidad que el genial artista reflejó en la obra original. Además, se reproducen dos autorretratos del propio Goya, uno de ellos pintando.
In Lobo's opinion, this has been the "most complicated" work he has done, "but not because of its technical difficulty", but because of the time pressure to finish the work.
It is a municipal commission and permission had to be sought from Heritage to make the mural and when he gave the green light he had "only three weeks to have it finished and in that period it rained 10 days", so the artist has had to take advantage of holidays like Christmas to fulfill the order.
The mural has not left the neighborhood or anyone passing by indifferent. Located on Mozart Street next to Paseo de la Florida, the design plays with colors and lighting, taking advantage of the different planes of the wall to achieve the depth that the brilliant artist reflected in the original work. In addition, two self-portraits of Goya himself are reproduced, one of them painting.
Como os decía al principio, muy próximo al mural se encuentra la ermita de San Antonio de la Florida cuya decoración interior es obra de Goya y donde está enterrado en su cripta. El mural está situado también muy cerca de donde se cree que ocurrieron los fusilamientos reflejados en la obra y en las proximidades del pequeño cementerio que conserva los restos de los héroes de aquel 3 de mayo de 1808.
Como la obra está al aire libre, la podéis visitar a cualquier hora del día o de la noche.

As I said at the beginning, very close to the mural is the chapel of San Antonio de la Florida which interior decoration is a work by Goya and where he is buried in its crypt. The mural is also located very close to where it is believed that the executions reflected in the work took place and in the vicinity of the small cemetery that preserves the remains of the heroes of that May 3, 1808.
