Hay lugares en los que uno se reconcilia con la especie humana por haber sabido respetar y convivir con la naturaleza durante miles de años. El lago de Como, en Lombardía (Italia), a poco más de 40 minutos de Milán por autovía, es uno de ellos.
Allí están las montañas, los bosques, el lago (todo lo que se formó de modo natural hace millones de años) pero también está la huella humana; las iglesias románicas y góticas, los palacios de la aristocracia, la arquitectura popular, las industrias de la seda, el siglo XX e incluso el XXI, en un todo armónico y equilibrado. Todo ello conforma un paisaje que, de tanta perfección y belleza, parece un decorado, la recreación artificial de un sueño.
De la misma manera que hay puestas de sol que parecen hechas por Inteligencia Artificial, la primera impresión que percibe el visitante del lago de Como remite a una película musical de los años dorados de Hollywood, una especie de Calle 42 alpino.
Me han dicho que aquí la primavera es verdaderamente espectacular. Pero, como a mí me gusta el otoño, he ido a conocer uno de los rincones más secretos y bellos de Italia en mi estación del año favorita para que, así, me guste aún más.
There are places where you can truly appreciate the human spirit because it has been able to respect and coexist with nature for thousands of years. Lake Como, in Lombardy (Italy), a little more than 40 minutes from Milan by highway, is this place.
There you can find the mountains, the woods, the lake (everything that was formed naturally millions of years ago) but also the human footprint; the Romanesque and Gothic churches, the aristocratic palaces, the popular architecture, the silk industries, the 20th and even the 21st century, in a harmonious and balanced whole. All this forms a landscape that, with so much perfection and beauty, looks like a stage set, the artificial recreation of a dream.
Like sunsets that seem to be made by Artificial Intelligence, the first impression that the visitor perceives of Lake Como is reminiscent of a musical film from the golden years of Hollywood, a sort of alpine 42nd Street.
I have been told that spring here is truly spectacular. But, as I like autumn, I have gone to visit one of the most beautiful places on the planet in my favorite season of the year, so that I like it even more.
La belleza del paisaje que rodea el lago Como, los Alpes, y los pueblos que cuelgan casi al borde de sus laderas y en sus orillas lo convierten en uno de los más bonitos y pintorescos de Italia. Conocido también como el lago Lario, tiene una caprichosa forma de Y invertida y todo alrededor de este fantástico estanque natural parece medirse en grado superlativo.
Sus 146 m2 de superficie lo llevan a ser el tercero más grande del país transalpino y también uno de los más profundos de Europa con sus 410 metros de depresión en el punto más bajo. Desde hace siglos ha sido retiro espiritual y de vacaciones de reyes y emperadores como Napoleón Bonaparte. Allí encontraron inspiración músicos como Verdi o Liszt, escritores como Stendhal o artistas globales como Leonardo.
Aquí también se vivieron hechos históricos, como la detención de Mussolini en Dongo; sus escenarios de cine roban plano a ladrones tan guapos como George Clooney y Brad Pitt, o al no menos atractivo agente 007 Daniel Craig en Ocean’s Twelve oCasino Royal
The beauty of the landscape around Lake Como, the Alps, as well as the villages which hang almost on the edge of its slopes and on its shores make it one of the most beautiful and picturesque in Italy. Also known as Lake Lario, it has a whimsical inverted Y shape and everything around this fantastic natural pond seems to measure up to a superlative degree.
Its 146 m2 of surface area make it the third largest in the transalpine country and also one of the deepest in Europe with its 410 meters of depression at the lowest point. For centuries it has been a spiritual and vacation retreat for kings and emperors such as Napoleon Bonaparte. Musicians like Verdi or Liszt, writers like Stendhal or global artists like Leonardo found inspiration there.

Hoy muchas de las famosas villas de Como son propiedad de estrellas del séptimo arte: cantantes, celebrities y grandes fortunas. El lago y sus pueblecitos se han convertido en uno de los destinos turísticos más famosos de Italia.
Viajar en otoño al lago Como tiene muchos atractivos y alguna ventaja. El paisaje se torna aún más bucólico y romántico, evitará las multitudes del verano y ganará en tranquilidad. No le pesará dedicar algunos días a recorrer este paraje natural en el que alguno de sus picos montañosos se elevan a más de 2.000 metros de altura, y agradecerá detenerse en alguno de sus coloridos municipios de tonos pastel y ocres. Partiendo desde Como, la localidad que da nombre al lago, y subiendo hacia el norte, estas serían algunas paradas obligatorias: Torno, Lenno, Tremezzo, Menaggio, Varenna y Bellagio.
Today many of Como's famous villas are owned by movie stars: singers, celebrities, and millionaires. The lake and its villages have become one of the most famous tourist destinations in Italy.
Traveling to Lake Como in autumn has many attractions and some advantages. The scenery becomes even more bucolic and romantic, you will avoid the summer crowds and gain in tranquility. You won't mind spending a few days touring this natural landscape where some of its mountain peaks rise to over 2,000 meters high, and you will appreciate stopping in one of its colorful municipalities of pastel and ocher tones. Starting from Como, the town that gives its name to the lake, and going northwards, these would be some mandatory stops: Torno, Lenno, Tremezzo, Menaggio, Varenna and Bellagio.
El bonito municipio de Como, a 45 kilómetros al norte de Milán, en Lombardía, merece una visita detenida antes de tomar un barco o emprender el recorrido en coche por las sinuosas carreteras alrededor de la laguna.
Callejee y cotillee sus tiendas –puede que se tope con alguna celebridad internacional–; visite el duomo, la catedral que tardó tres siglos en construirse, o el templo Voltiano dedicado al inventor de la pila, Alejandro Volta. Tampoco se puede perder la iglesia de San Fedele, de origen paleocristiano, y Villa Olmo, la famosa mansión neoclásica de 1782 que dio cobijo a personajes como Napoleón o Garibaldi y hoy acoge exposiciones de arte y conciertos.
The pretty town of Como, 45 kilometers north of Milan in Lombardy, is worth a leisurely visit before taking a boat or driving along the winding roads around the lagoon.
Stroll and gossip in the stores - you might bump into an international celebrity - visit the duomo, the cathedral that took three centuries to build, or the Voltiano temple dedicated to the inventor of the battery, Alexander Volta. Also not to be missed is the early Christian church of San Fedele, and Villa Olmo, the famous neoclassical mansion of 1782 that gave shelter to the likes of Napoleon and Garibaldi and today hosts art exhibitions and concerts.
La villa de Torno, prácticamente destruida por los españoles en 1522, conserva parte de sus fortificaciones medievales. Lenno es otro encantador pueblo de fachadas de tonos pajizos y calles empinadas y empedradas, donde se ubica la Villa del Balbianello. Una espectacular mansión donde se rodaron películas. En Tremezzo está la casona más famosa de todo el lago, Villa Carlotta, que data del siglo XVII, donde destacan sus bellos jardines y sus salones repletos de obras de arte.
El municipio de Menaggio resulta ideal para los amantes de las rutas de senderismo y ciclismo de montaña y forma, con Varenna y la célebre y señorial Bellagio, el vértice del triángulo de la Y en que se bifurcan las aguas del lago.
En Varenna destaca el Castello di Vezio y la Villa Monastero, mientras que la glamurosa Bellagio, con sus calles de grandes escalones adoquinados, presume de ofrecer las mejores vistas panorámicas de la región y también tiene sus villas ideales Melzi y Serbelloni.

The village of Torno, practically destroyed by the Spanish in 1522, has kept part of its medieval fortifications. Lenno is another charming village of straw-colored facades and steep cobblestone streets, where the Villa del Balbianello is located. A spectacular mansion where movies were filmed. In Tremezzo is the most famous mansion of the entire lake, Villa Carlotta, dating from the seventeenth century, which highlights its beautiful gardens and rooms full of works of art.
The municipality of Menaggio is ideal for lovers of hiking and mountain biking and forms, with Varenna and the famous and stately Bellagio, the apex of the Y triangle where the waters of the lake fork.
Varenna boasts the Castello di Vezio and the Villa Monastero, while glamorous Bellagio, with its streets of large cobblestone steps, boasts the best panoramic views in the region and also has its ideal villas Melzi and Serbelloni.
